The reasons melanomas are rising like the reasons for rises in other cancers is complex. Excessive sun exposure on a regular or occasional basis is a factor.
Skin Cancer/Sunscreen - the DilemmaThose sunscreens that work by shifting UV radiation from the UVB spectrum to the UVA spectrum enable people stay in under damaging UVA radiation longer without obtaining the benefit of Vitamin D3 as only UVB changes the cholesterol in your skin to pre-vitamin d and starts the process.
Here is one of the slides from the above video plotting the incidence of skin cancer against sunscreen developments.

Please watch the video to see more details.

To understand why people now days are burning more readily when exposed to natural sunlight we have to consider the possibility that changes in our diet has led to changes in the molecular structure of our skin cells.

Stephan Whole Health Source has considered the evidence to support this idea
Basically industrially made vegetable oils like corn, soy, , safflower and sunflower oil, and everything that contains Omega 6 worsens the inflammatory status of your skin this may have an impact on the skin's ability to make vitamin d.

There has to be a reason why year on year vitamin d status is getting ever lower.
