A MUST WATCH wonderful watchable lecture on Vitamin D

A MUST WATCH

This is an informative thought provoking lecture on vitamin D by a Doctor and head of a research department.

(and it is very funny too)

The Vitamin D Pandemic and its Health Consequences
Presented by Michael Holick, PhD, MD, Professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics and director of the General Clinical Research Center at Boston University Medical Center Keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 34th European Symposium on Calcified Tissues, Copenhagen 5 May, 2007

This is an interesting and informative link too.

Please DO take the time to check out these lectures.

The second will download more quickly than the first and has some very interesting thoughts on vitamin d and cancers.

I watched and listened to them too. During treatment in 2002 and since then I've tried to get about 20 to 30 minutes of direct sunshine a day at least 3 days a week with most of my skin exposed, even in winter, since I work from home. Maybe it has made enough of a difference for me to help (At 7 years from surgery and Stage I, I am NED.) But this year the sun has been steadily not cooperating, so I have increased my daily vitamin D3 intake at present to 1800-2000 IU. I will be taking more vitamin D more often now, since it appears perhaps latitudes like Alaska are so deficient. (The native population survived here over time largely by their consumption of whale blubber and fish that contain vitamin D, I gather.) I do eat lots of salmon.

The one thing not mentioned (or did I miss it?) in the presentations was the value of sunshine obtained directly through the eyes, as it ends up affecting the pineal gland and that ends up affecting the melatonin level. One can't get that from "canned" vitamin D.

Thanks so much for sharing the presentations with us, RB.

Appreciatively,

AlaskaAngel

my browser will not download the lecture. Is there another way to get it? I take it it is a lecture on getting enough D3 (i take 1200mg with my calcium, is that enough?)
thanks! Beth

Thanks RB

Hey, I loved the webcast by Dr. Holick, thanks. It was packed with valuable information on vitamin D, was funny, extremely interesting and educational. Everyone here would benefit to listen!

Yes,the sunshine vitamin decreases breast tumor proliferation and increases differantiation to stop breast cancer in its tracks. However, as the webcast points out, you need at least 75nmol/L to get get vitamin D3 to work on the cellular tumor level. I will be checking my level in a few weeks. Hope it is up there.

PS. I am finally starting to read your book and find it very interesting, up-beat and motivational. ( will give you a good review when I finish it)

is 95mnol too much

for R.B. or others, is 95mnol/l getting to be too much?
I read all the articles and have more regularly been taking 400iu 2 times a day and was expecting to have to take more and order vitamin D capsules but now that this test came back at this level I'm wondering whether I'm getting enough already. any thoughts? not sure my docs here are so up on this stuff.
thanks
sarah

Looking at the programs again, did I miss that there is an amount that's too much or not?

Sunshine is a big source, fish can be quite high eg mackerel 400 IU in about 100 grams, many multi minerals contain vitamin D, fish oil can have anything from none to a lot.

I cannot give any advice on dosage, I am to qualified to do so and as is evident from the videos opinions are split. The two lectures look at intake issues.

Thanks for the kind thought Robin. It is heartening when it helps. I know you understand what is involved from writing your own book which I am sure will be a great help to people.

Watch out for the sunshine...

Dont't Seek the Sun: Top Reasons to Get Vitamin D From Your Diet

Research shines dangerous truth on sun exposure and vitamin D

Our bodies need vitamin D to build and maintain strong and healthy bodies. Without vitamin D, the body cannot use calcium and phosphorus — two minerals necessary for healthy bones.1 The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) does not recommend getting vitamin D from sun exposure (natural) or indoor tanning (artificial) since ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning beds can lead to the development of skin cancer. Getting vitamin D from a healthy diet (which includes naturally enriched vitamin D foods, fortified foods and beverages and/or vitamin supplements) and practicing sun protection offer a healthier alternative. Still skeptical? Consider these scientific facts:

The videos above recognise the issues of the dangers of excessive sun exposure and respond to them, and look at relative risks and benefits.

The problem is many are getting neither sun nor adequate vitamin D and the result in increasing level of deficiencies.

Under 20 mins of exposure produces surprising amounts of vitamin D.

Nobody is suggesting other than very prudent sun exposure as an option, dietary supplementation is another, although it is rather newer and the body is immensely complex and subtle.

The reasons melanomas are rising like the reasons for rises in other cancers is complex. Excessive sun exposure on a regular or occasional basis is a factor.

Skin Cancer/Sunscreen - the DilemmaThose sunscreens that work by shifting UV radiation from the UVB spectrum to the UVA spectrum enable people stay in under damaging UVA radiation longer without obtaining the benefit of Vitamin D3 as only UVB changes the cholesterol in your skin to pre-vitamin d and starts the process.
Here is one of the slides from the above video plotting the incidence of skin cancer against sunscreen developments.

Please watch the video to see more details.

To understand why people now days are burning more readily when exposed to natural sunlight we have to consider the possibility that changes in our diet has led to changes in the molecular structure of our skin cells.

Stephan Whole Health Source has considered the evidence to support this idea
Basically industrially made vegetable oils like corn, soy, , safflower and sunflower oil, and everything that contains Omega 6 worsens the inflammatory status of your skin this may have an impact on the skin's ability to make vitamin d.

There has to be a reason why year on year vitamin d status is getting ever lower.
