calcium and magnesium taken together?
Hello all,
I watched Oprah this afternoon and Dr. Oz was on talking about food. They talked about calcim and this is what Dr. Oz said (a direct quote) "to deposit calcium appropriately in your bones you don't want to take calcium alone - take with magnesium all the time. You want to take them together. We normally tell folks to take 1200 mg. of calcium and anywhere between 600 - 800 mg. of magesium." He also said taking magnesium with the calcium avoids constipation. I always thought we shouldn't take magnesium with the calcium.
What are your thoughts?
Mary Jo

Absolutely. That is what I was told several years ago by my nutritionist.

Thanks again,

Great Thread Maryjo
MaryJo,
I was told not take more than 500grams of calicum at one time to spread the intake of calicum - our bodies cannot ingest more than that at a time.
Please correct me if I am wrong - but this is what my health food store
professional told me. I also take Vit. D and magnisium with the calicum
and I distribute it in three parts throughout the day. I was also told not
to take B 6 or any B complex vitamins at the same time with calicum.
This is a great thread. I would appreicate any additional information on
what vitamins should not be taken along with others as that can defeat
our good intentions.
Kind Regards,
Jean

You need calcium and magnesium (and Vitamin D) to build healthy bone but I stand by my "taking them separately".
Unless you are using calcium and magnesium to relax the muscles to help you sleep, they should be taken separately. This is especially true if you do not eat enough greens (the best natural source of magnesium) and are deficient in magnesium. Calcium absorption overtakes that of magnesium. And since magnesium is more highly water soluble than calcium, then it is washed out of the body before it can be utilized.
Calcium also greatly inhibits the uptake of iron (hence eating the kosher way of not mixing meat and dairy). The body so preferentially uptakes calcium over other metals (yes, they are atomically metals - magnesium too) that iron and others are wasted.

There were quite a few posts on this a year or so ago so you might like to search.
Please also see posts on omega threes and bone density osteoporosis etc.
Wider calcium in the diet is also a factor for consideration. Excess calcium and other deficits can have negative consequences - see previous posts.
Some argue whole food veg etc. are the best starting point.
