Herceptin and Antibiotics

Hi all
Just a question for the experts. I came down with a sore throat and cold last
week and the Dr. gave me antibiotics for 10 days. My herceptin treatment is
next Wednesday, I don't want to miss it but should I reshedule it after the antibiotics. My cold is better but I guess I shouldn't stop the antibiotics.
There are so many meds that don't work well together, and when I read the
insert I thought antibiotics are dangerous too. When you are taking so many
drugs, its hard to keep up with all the side effects.

Thanks

Just be sure to mention what you are taking when you go in to get your infusion. Your infusion RN should check with your oncologist if she has any questions.

According to the prescribing information for herceptin, there have been no controlled drug interaction studies. http://www.gene.com/gene/products/in...traindications

I was on Cipro, Augmentin or Macrobid 100 for recurring UTIs while on Herceptin. I know these drugs were ok.

Smile Gina...

has said that Z pack (Zithromyacin) actually may HELP reduce the level of HER2 in our body. I am trying to find one of her posts regarding. Ask your doc if you can get a Z pack as this is what I have taken when needed.

Pat B,

Since I started Herceptin last June I've had numerous sinus infections - have one right now. I've been on and off Levaquin several times and currently am taking Avelox along with prednisone (spelling?) a steroid to reduce the swelling in the sinus. I have not had to miss a Herceptin treatment while on anticiotics. My oncologist is the one who prescribed the antibiotics to me so she is aware that I'm taking them. Hopefully, once I finish Herceptin I will no longer be plagued with sinus infections.

Had a Herceptin Treatment Today...

...and am on the 3rd day of the Z-pack. I have also been plagued by sinus infections this winter and have never had a break in my treatments (Navelbine/Herceptin/Zometa) due to being on Antibiotics (I have been on amoxicillin, cipro and leviquin). You should always mention any new prescriptions prescribed by your primary care doctor when you go for chemo, but I don't think it will stop your treatment. The one thing you should be aware of is that if you normally take any antacid type medications for queasiness after chemo, the antacids impact the effectiveness of the antibiotics.

I was on some type of antibiotic almost the entire time I was on Herceptin. From z-pack for sinus infection to the big guns for staph infection. Evidently no adverse effects from the antibiotics.

I just came off a 10 day course of Levaquin (2 five day courses, back-to-back) for a bad cold, to prevent developing pneumonia while on Herceptin/Gemzar. No complications related to the antibiotic.
