Latest on my sister

Hi Everyone,

My sister is still in hospital…been 3 weeks so far. The latest scans have shown no progression and though she is off the Lapitinib trial in Boston, her doctor attributes some of this stabilized state to the drug. Although she has shown no recent progression, her condition appears to be slowly deteriorating. The doctors say that although her liver has not shown progression in over a year, there is so much cancer and much damage caused by chemo that the “good cells” are finding it harder and harder to keep the function up. This explains her very weakened state and many hours per day of sleep. Again, although no progression in her brain mets, the damage from the second series of WBR has set in. . The doctors say over and over again how remarkable it is that she is still living and how she did better than they had ever expected this last year.

In any event, they are moving her to a palliative care hospital and are hoping that physiotherapy will help to get her stronger so that she can spend 2 to 3 days per week at home. My mother is starting to organize some of her alternative therapies as well. The doctors are starting her on hormone therapy and if it goes well (manageable side effects), they will start her back on Herceptin. I can’t imagine that she will live much longer, but she is such a fighter, nothing would surprise us. Our hope is that she will get stronger and be able to go home a few days a week to spend time with her husband, children and friends…and God willing, she will be with us for a long time.

(P.s. she experiences NO pain…what a blessing!)

So many of you have had extensive disease at one point or another, and are doing so well today. It is truly an inspiration for those newly diagnosed.

Happy Healing to everyone,

Celina
