8 days so far in hospital for diarrhea

I came in the hospital with a temp. of 103.7 and dehydrated from diarrhea. I spent 2 1/2 days in ICU and now am on the 8th day in the hospital. I had just finished my second cycle of xeloda. I feel fine other then the diarrhea. I wasn't in this long for my surgeries. My Dr. says it is from the chemo and it can take awhile to get out of your system. Anyone else have this problem from xeloda? Patty H

NO, I've never had Zeloda, sure doesn't sound like much fun Patty. Hope you get it under control soon.

Not heard of such a severe diarrhea problem, but serious hand and foot syndrome in two women I know who had to get off Zeloda as they got to where they could hardly walk or use their hands.

So sorry to hear you had this reaction too. Last July I started taking Xeloda. I was on it for 9 days when one morning I woke up not feeling too well. I got up to go to the bathroom and passed out cold. (hitting my head on the dresser) My Onc said to stop the Xeloda immediately. I went in to see him a couple of days later and everything seemed to be fine. Then a few days later I started feeling kind of lousy, diarrhea, slight fever, weak. I went to bed and figured I would feel better in a couple of days. WRONG! I ended up getting worse real fast. I ended up in the hospital with fever of 104+ severe diarrhea, dehydrated, and blood counts dangerously low. They gave me 2 units of blood and 1 unit of plasma. I was on 4 or 5 different big gun antibiotics and received dailly shots of Nupogen and Procrit. I was in the hospital for a week and they wanted me to stay longer, but I was so depressed I told the doctor that I was going to sneak out the window if they didn't let me go home! So they let me go home with lots of pills and I slowly got better. My Onc said that my body didn't properly metabolize the Xeloda and it built up to toxic levels and thats what did me in. It made the lining of my intestines raw which enabled the bacteria in there to get into my bloodstream. That's what caused the raging infection in my body and thats why it took so long for the diarrhea to go away. I hadn't been that sick since my stem cell transplant in 1997! But the upside to this story is that I have been NED ever since. I just won't ever be able to use Xeloda again!
I did have to take meds for the diarrhea for several days after I got home, but it finally began to clear up.
I know how awful being in the hopital is and I hope you will be home soon.

I was too was in the hospital after taking Xeloda. I felt like I was dying. I had nausea, vomiting, and severe diahrrea. I had diahrrea for 18 days, lost 14 lbs the first 3 days after symptoms started. I took lomotile, kopectate, questran and flagyl. I have never been so sick. Doc wanted to try again on lower dose and shots of something to stop diahrrea, but I said no. So I have just started on Navalbine. Hope that I feel well enough on this drug to take Dad's ashes back to Scotland in two weeks.
Hang in there, hope that the symptoms get under control, I really feel for you. I know my behind was "glued" to the pot.
