Met with onc today who says that more than 5 oz/day -- 25 oz/week -- wine increases chance of bc recurrance by 40%. Am post menopausal. Tumor was 7mm; Her2 pos w/+3; node neg. Had lumpectomy May 7 but onc says margins were not clear 'enough' -- .228cm -- and that I need more surgery. And, that I should cut out the wine w/dinner altogether. Really?? Looking for stats and studies. Anybody know where to send me? Thanks. Jane T.

I've never stopped having wine each evening since my diagnosis/surgery/chemo/rads back in Apr. 2002. My onc said it was fine, and, being a Reference Librarian, I researched this as well. It appears more of a problem if you are ER+ve (I'm negative) and in all the studies I read about, for those who took 800mg of folic acid a day, there was NO increased risk. Needless to say, I take 800mg of folic, as well as many other supplements - sure beats anti-depressants!
