Re: Gene-Guided Chemotherapy Research Questioned

In the DISC assay (which was invented by Dr. Larry Weisenthal by the way), the entire contents of the cell culture are cytocentrifuged onto permanent microscope slides and differentially stained to allow discrimination of normal and neoplastic cells and living and dead cells. The endpoint for cell-death is delayed loss of membrane integrity, which is a surrogate for apoptosis.

The DISC assay is the only assay that involves "direct visualization" of the cancer cells at endpoint. This allows for accurate assessment of drug activity, discriminates tumor from non-tumor cells, and provides a permanent archival record. Originators of the MTT and ATP assays modeled assay conditions on the DISC assay.

So! If you can put on an iPhone what you can put on a PC, then the answer to your statement is yes, they can put funcitonal profiling on an iPhone!
