Getting my mother to take Pain Relievers
My mother has been diagnosed with stage IV Breast Cancer. Discovery was because of her liver - she was in pain and turning jaundiced. They also discovered bone mets in her femur and on her cervical column.
She started with Herceptin, and then two weeks later started receiving Carboplatin. She has had three rounds of that so far. That cleared up the Jaundice real good at first, and she was feeling well, although the pain in her leg was keeping her from walking. Abouth three weeks ago they started her on Radiation, first two weeks to the cervical column, and now she has had a week and a half on her femur. Monday is her last day or that radiation.
This last week she has started getting Jaundiced again. She is also having real pain issues, particularly with her lower back. The doctor said this was from the liver, but it could be just a blockage - she is getting a cat scan next week. They are switching her chemo to something new on Monday, but she does not remember the name of it, only that it comes in pills - two in the morning and two in the evening.
She was given a prescription for Oxycodone, but she refuses to have it filled. She does not want to become dizzy, and saw that one of the side effects was nausea and vomiting. She takes one Advil in the afternoon and one in the evening but is afraid to take more. She is in pain, but refuses to call anyone because she is convinced there is nothing they can do about it.
I don't know what to do at this point. I want her to take some pain medicine but I don't know how to convince her. And I am afraid that it might actually make her vomit and that will be a big problem for her chemo.
