some good news

Hi all, just wanted to let folks know that Navelbine appears to be working. I freaked out about the circulating tumor cell test result of 6 (5 or below is considered much better) when I began this tx and received a lot of support from people here about that. After 5 weeks on Navelbine (w/ herceptin) we repeated the circulating tumor cell test. The result was... 0...ta dah!!!! My liver enzymes (ALT/AST) had also begun to drop. Yesterday, I found out that my CA 27.29 went from 240 to 153 in a month and my ALT/AST are so close to normal. I also have to admit that I feel better than I did in many ways. I realize now that the liver tumors were causing me some discomfort-had a lot of denial there.

I've been reading more on here about herceptin side-effecty things and I'm wondering if just being on the stuff long term the way many of us have been makes things start to happen. I have ALWAYS been able to control my weight (grateful for that), but lately I've gained some in the middle and I KNOW I am not eating more than usual. I'm a vege-aholic, i don't like junk food, eat little meat, some cheese, blah, blah, blah. But my clothes are too tight in the waist now, I refuse to buy new ones. i have chronic sinus stuff and some of the digestive junk that people have mentioned.

I'm thinking that I am now resistant to herceptin anyway (maybe navelbine will spark the synergy). Going off of it and on to, say, Tykerb I guess will depend on how long I continue to improve. We are also not sure if I've lost hormonal pathways to treat-I hope not, but I know all of the cross-talk trickiness can happen. I'm excited to see all the good posts about rectifying resistances, though.

Anyway, I'm excited to have good news as this last year has been too much of a rollercoaster. I'm also excited to have hair-i look like an FBI agent, but I have hair! Eyebrows, too, and even better eyelashes than before-it's about time something came back improved! I also realize now how much taxol/carbo depressed me mentally, emotionally and physically. Navelbine has its stuff, but I am energetic enough (comparative value is a wonderful thing) to do more around the house. I'm back to teaching a parent/child class in my kids' school's early childhood program. Volunteering at school a bit more. Goofing off with my kids more. Helping friends out again feels so good after all they have done for me. I take my supplements more consistently. I started an awesome hypno/psychotherapy program. Getting better at meditating too. Saw Deepak Chopra in Denver this week and loved the lecture. His new book is Life After Death; the burden of proof. It so complemented the meditative/hypnotherapy work I've been doing and it all feels good. I just hope I can continue to think these things even when cancer stuff gets rough.

So more update than I planned on giving, but there it is. I am taking time everyday to hold ALL of us in a healing space. I root for everyone and have been saddened by recent losses and setbacks for people. My prayers are with everyone past and present.

Joy Joy Joy Joy Joy!

I've been thinking about you a lot and was hoping you'd update with some good news! You've been in my thoughts and prayers. So I'm feelin' your name about your great news.

I'm so glad you not only have gotten great response to this new combo, but especially that you are feeling so much better. I hear you about the taxol/carbo depression - when I was getting that I'd get treated on Friday and by Monday at noon I'd be crying hysterically. Of course there are lots of legitimate emotions and fears we experience, but strong chemo definitely impacted my ability to cope.

So happy you are able to enjoy another slapdown. You didn't mention chocolate...maybe you should meditate on that, too!

love
Chris

Wink Dear Joy

Navelbine has been a good drug for a number of us on this board. It did in my extensive liver mets, in combination with Taxol and Herceptin. As has often been said here, for many of us the Herceptin needs another drug to boost its efficacy, and this is the key to pushing back the cancer.

As the others have said, I repeat how happy I am for your recent success.
Stay with the program until you are NED. OK?

Live in the moment.

MY STORY SO FAR ~~~~
Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

ta dah is right!

Joy,

What great news that your test results are going in the best direction possible. Keep up the good work you're doing in all areas, from the medical to the family and social connections you've got going again. The meditation is an excellent way to calm things in our lives. I saw Deepak Chopra on television talking about his book; I'm sure it's a good one, but I haven't read it yet. Thanks for filling us in on everything. Keep living well.
