Picking an onc

How much to value experience?
My mom's onc (inherited "fellow" under prev onc) can't have all that much independent experience. I know oncs have to start somewhere but....
Other factors?

Rich
I look for one that is specific to my type of cancer, one who is up to date on all new treatments, one who LISTENS (very important) and is willing to take time, one who is open to discussion and "out of the box" thinking...
One who will return my phone call if I have a concern or a test result pending...In my opinion, when you find the right one..."you know"...or at least I did.
Hope this helps, i am sure I will think of more....prayers to you and your Mom.

Rich,
Finding the right onc is so important. But not always an easy job. I would recommend a second opinion. Sheila had some great suggestions.

I think it is a delicate balance between experience and being currant on the latest trials, articles and treatments. Sometimes new oncs have great enthusiasm. My hospital supports the team approach. I know if my onc has questions she will go to all others in the practice to get their thoughts and opinions.

Good luck to your Mom. She has a great son. Let us know how the biopsy goes today.

Rich,

My onc is not bc specific, yet because of that and his exp with other cancers, he is familiar with other tx's, ie: chemos that might not be the 'norm' for bc, yet a possible 'option'. Which is what happened in my case, in fact.

Other than that, what Sheila says is RIGHT on the money. My onc 'knows me' because he listens. Takes TIME with me. Thinks outside the box and respects my feelings and the information I bring him, concerning a tx that I want or may need in the future.

In return, I RESPECT him. It has to be mutual.

Best wishes to your mom,
pattyz
