As of now, it looks like it is heading straight for us. I live in Baton Rouge, 60 miles from New Orleans. We have a generator, which is a life saver and lots of food. We have so many hurricane around here you get sort of use to it. We are enough inland though that the worst that usually happens it a lot of knocked down trees and electricity outages. We were without electricity for over a week with Katrina..tks for asking. I'll let you all know how it goes when I get electricity back after it hits...sherryg683

Cool Affected by Gustav

Hi there! I just got out of NOLA yesterday after another small surgery. AMTRAK cancelled my train and commondeered it to take evacuees North to Memphis they would NOT take me as a paying passenger/post surgery and drop me off at home here in Jackson,MS. I have three drians and apain pump and was incredulous that they could cancel ones transportation with only and 18 notice out of a city under a state of emergency. Guess paying passengers dont give them the positive media coverage they want/need. (Can you tell I am still PO'd?) I am a Katrina survivor (was in treatment during) and am well aware the need for mass transit for ALL.
Got a ride out yesterday morning and we are preparing for possible tornados etc...SherryG I will be thinking of you!!! Stay safe!

Marcia (Soccermom) who got logged out a while back and am too preoccupied to reset log-in.
Love to all!

Everyone, just head north! Far and fast! Bless you ladies. Keep us updated.

I have two friends who have chosen not to leave and I am disgusted with them. One is in Uptown, one near UNO and only blocks from Ponchartrain. They both lost almost everything in last time, but they did both evacuate last time. They think they will be able to 'ride it out'. Needless to say I expect to run low on sympathy for them. Happy that my friends in Gretna evaced to Lafayette, but I worry they didn't go far enough. Oh well. I will say lots of prayers that it moves through fast with the least amount of damage possible.

After what happened with Katrina, they are taking things a lot more seriously. They have told everyone to evacuate New Orleans, there will be no shelters, no rescues, no aid...GET OUT! They have told everyone if they see anyone on the streets, they had better have a good reason or they will be arrested. It got so out of hand with Katrina, it was a war zone literally. There are still some people that refuse to evacuate. So I figure, if they are that stubborn then they will have to deal with the consequences. Thank you for the offer of shelter, Marcia. We are going to be fine here in Baton Rouge. Of course everyone is getting ready to have no electricity for days but we have boarded up our windows and have a generator and a window air condition unit and are ready to wait it out...sherryg683

I'm not joking. Anyone that needs a place to stay is welcome here in my home in the Richmond Va area. I'm advising everyone to read my new "survival packs" thread in the "keeping your mind off of BC" room.

Now that the hurricane has hit, we can all be thankful that it was not worse. But, I hear on the TV that Baton Rouge is taking quite a hit with high winds and some flooding. Hope Sherryg lives on "higher" ground.

Hubby and I were just looking at our Atlas and find that the highest point in Louisiana is only 535 feet! That is even lower than the highest point in Florida!
"I did not know that!"

We have some other sisters in the storm path such as Leslie in Miss.

And we were shocked with Marcia's story of trying to get home on the train!

P.S. Hard to imagine that one year ago hubby and I were preparing for a 5-day visit to New Orleans. We even took a bus tour that went through the north part of town that had been under water and where still hundreds of FEMA trailers are being lived in. It was no joke to see those dinky things parked in the driveways of homes that were in the slow process of being rebuilt or made liveable.

We also took a drive across Lake Ponchartrain north to Covington. There is ONE causeway with 4 lanes. It takes about 25 minutes under normal traffic conditions to cross that long span! It only takes less than 10 minutes to cross our large Lake Washington, so I got a real appreciation for the size of New Orleans' "lake."
