11 Items You Don't Have to Buy Organic

Thought this might be of interest to those that want to eat organic but have a hard time affording to.
This is from Dr. Weil

http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/TIP02559

The best way to reap the health benefits of fruits and vegetables without exposing yourself to potentially harmful pesticides is to choose organic produce whenever possible, especially those varieties which are more likely to be contaminated. But if organic produce is cutting into your budget, it's okay to buy non-organic varieties of the fruits and vegetables listed below, which tend to contain the least amount of pesticides. However, make it a habit to wash them thoroughly before eating or cooking, to remove dirt and bacteria.
  1. Asparagus
  2. Avocados
  3. Bananas
  4. Broccoli
  5. Cabbage
  6. Corn (sweet, frozen)
  7. Kiwi
  8. Mangos
  9. Onions
  10. Pineapples
  11. Peas (sweet, frozen)
He also writes

When you do buy commercially grown vegetables, be sure to peel such vegetables as carrots, potatoes, cucumbers and acorn squash. To reduce your exposure to pesticides, I also recommend washing green beans and leafy vegetables in a solution of one teaspoon of dishwashing detergent to a gallon of water. Swirl the fruits and vegetables in the solution and then rinse them well with warm water.

For organically grown produce I have heard to soak them in a light vinegar/water solution for 15 minutes. And wipe off to get off the dirt and bacteria.

Thanks!

Hi Janet,

Thanks for this list - I try to buy EVERYTHING organic now, but it's not always easy to find where I live - a rural area without organic markets anywhere near. This gives me more "breathe easy" options - thanks!

Organic

Thanks, Janet/FL!

I'll try asking this question in 2 threads...

Can anyone recommend a wine/alcohol that is certified organically produced?

Hi Angel
I can't recommend one, but my health food store stocks lots of them. Since grapes are very high on the list of dirty produce, it makes sense to think about buying organic wine.
My acupuncturist was very much against drinking wine. For some reason, he said Scotch was the best to drink, if you do drink. Now that is the first I had ever heard of that!
