pain with port??

Hi..I had a port put in finally!!! I am in so much pain on the side of the port..my shoulder and neck is very painful! I had the port put in last Wednesday, and at first it was sore than it got better and now it is so sore again...it is so hard to stay "up" with constant pain..it even radiates into my right side of the head. I feel like I am slipping down that downward spiral...any suggestions?? anyone else have this? Help!!

Follow the little voice in your head...

Yes, go back to the Doc that put it in and don't let them pass you off... it could be a number of things - keep in mind though, that you may still have swelling and it may be pressing on something that causes your pain. My surgeon recommended that I have a pediatric port (really small) and it has worked the same as any bigger one. There is less of it to bump out, less trauma to the surrounding tissues and smaller scar and overall same benefit as the adult ones... I wonder why pediatric ones aren't used more often...

I had my port placed on September 22nd, so mine is still pretty new. I have never experienced the type of pain you are describing,,not even close. I would DEFINATLEY get back to the doctor ASAP to figure out what is causing the pain for you...I hope things get better for you very soon.

Thinking of you

Dear Tammy I had alot of pain after my port was inserted and was told that it was ok and it would settle in time. The symptoms were more aggrevating than the chemo! After just one treatment they could not inject into it , and on scan it had kinked up into my neck and was taken out. Best to get it checked out. regards Romo

Tammy,

I never had any pain with my port other than a little discomfort the day it was put in. You should definitely see the doctor about it. On top of everything else that you have to go through you certainly don't need to be putting up with that much pain from the port.
