The Importance Of Breast Cancer Screening Should Be Emphasized By Health Providers

Wayne State University researchers believe medical practitioners can help reduce the number of breast cancer deaths among low-income African-American women by more effectively educating their patients about the importance of mammography screening. Re: The Importance Of Breast Cancer Screening Should Be Emphasized By Health Provider

30, 40 years ago I read about medical students in Taiwan providing free 'pap' during summer breaks for women living in the rural area. Often they had to spend time persuading women to undergo the procedure. A lot of people back then still held superstitious believes about cancer and thought once cancer was 'open' (being operated on), it would 'spread' (so if you don't touch it, you may live a little bit longer.)

An African American woman who worked with me in the same classroom 6, 7 years ago was a breast cancer survivor. The way this 62-year-old 'Granny' talked about cancer, even though herself was a survivor and had had her lumpectomy pretty close to the time I had mine in 2003, was filled with horror because she had known so many friends/relatives who had succumbed to the disease.

Access to adequate health care/screening is crucial for anyone to survive cancer.
