Many may be taking too little vit D to increase bone mass

I know in the past 400IU of vit D were recommended daily to help increase bone mass. Now the recommendations are 700-8--IU. See link...

Hi Robin,

I take way more than the new recommended. I take about 3000 mg. It is divided up among many different tablets and oil. Calcium with D that I take twice per day - a separate D3 - 1000 mg. that I take in the morning and there is D3 in my cod liver oil. PLUS I am out in the natural sunshine year round.

risk for kidney stones...something to look into...

"Exciting new research conducted at the Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska has revealed that supplementing with vitamin D and calcium can reduce your risk of cancer by an astonishing 77 percent. But too much can be dangerous if not taken properly. If you plan on taking extra Vitamin D (higher than the recommended amount), be sure to talk to your doctor about it first (especially if you have kidney disease) and don't take a megadose (> 2000 IU).Hypercalcemia caused by excess Vitamin D can lead to many complications including kidney stones and kidney failure."

During chemo...

I would think the Dr's answer here regarding daily amount of vitamin D, would be for after chemo, as well,...right?

This is taken from http://www.breastcancer.org/symptoms...7_10/index.jsp

Okay to take vitamins during chemo?

Question from Lisab: What are your recommendations as far as taking vitamins during chemo treatment?

Answer:
Larry Norton:

I actually have very strong views on this. The only vitamin supplementation I recommend is Vitamin D. I am advising Vitamin D-3 at 2000 units a day. It may turn out that higher doses are actually preferable, but we do know for sure that 2000 units is safe. Almost everybody in the world who does not live at the equator is Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D is made by the skin by exposure to the sun, but those of us in the far north or far south and who wear clothes do not have enough skin exposure to make enough Vitamin D. I do not advise excessive sun exposure because of risk of skin aging and skin cancer. Hence Vitamin D supplementation makes sense. 2000 units a day is not a very big dose. If one takes one's shirt off and goes in the sun for half an hour, your body will make 10,000 units. We do not find toxicity from Vitamin D until people take hundreds of thousands of units for prolonged periods. I used to prescribe a multivitamin, but I no longer do so. This is because of evidence that multivitamins may actually have adverse affects on the growth of cancers- prostate cancer as well as breast cancer. You are much better off getting your vitamins from healthy food instead of pills, except for Vitamin D. Eat a good healthy plant-based diet, lots of vegetables, some fruit. Look at the breastcancer.org Nutrition section.

Please see posts on osteoporosis and omega three DHA etc.

Lack of omega threes is frequently reported as a factor in low BMD etc.

Hey Mary Jo

I don't think what you're taking is too much as long as its D3... Even D2, it not too much.

Yes, it is D3. I wish on the bottles it would says "D3" on the front. It just says Vitamin D. When you look at the back of the bottle - next to the word Vitamin, it say D3 in the SMALLEST type possible. I had to borrow a pair of reading glasses at Walgreens to make sure it was a 3 and not a 2. Hahahahahahahahahaha!

Have a wonderful day all,

Mary Jo
