Ever heard of Prontandim?
Someone sent me this video about a supplement with green tea and turmeric, among other ingredients, that is supposed to reduce the oxidative stress in the body.
Does anybody know about this supplement, Protandim, which is meant to reduce oxidative stress? I ask, because it's being studied at two highly-respected hospitals. I've never heard of it.

How interesting! I've never heard of it until I watched the filmstrip. Here's an entry of protandim in Wikipedia:

Re: Ever heard of Prontandim?
http://www.protandim.com/all-natural-ingredients/
Quote:
The following is a list of Protandim ingredients:
Proprietary Blend 675 mg:
- Milk thistle extract (Silybum marianum) (seed)
- Bacopa extract (Bacopa monnieri) (aerial part)
- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) (root)
- Green tea extract (Camellia sinensis) (leaf)
- Turmeric extract (Curcuma longa) (rhizome)
|
I had heard of each ingredient (generally) having anti cancer properties, except Bacopa. But pubmed comes up with with a very recent abstract suggesting some forms of it may be antitumor:
Phytother Res. 2010 Jun;24(6):864-8.
Antitumor activities of dammarane triterpene saponins from Bacopa monniera.
Peng L, Zhou Y, Kong de Y, Zhang WD.
Department of Oncology, Jinling Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, PR China.
Abstract
Bioassay-guided methods were used to test the antitumor activity of methanol extract of the whole plant of Bacopa monniera (L.) Wettst. and four different fractions (petroleum ether, CHCl(3), EtOAc, and n-BuOH fractions) of the methanol extract. Among the five crude samples, n-BuOH fraction was noted to have the highest antitumor activity. The dammarane triterpene saponins isolated from n-BuOH fraction, bacopaside E (1) and bacopaside VII (3), had potential antitumor effect. 1 and 3 showed cytotoxicity of all the tested human tumor cell lines MDA-MB-231, SHG-44, HCT-8, A-549 and PC-3M in MTT assay in vitro, and showed 90.52 % and 84.13 % inhibition in mouse implanted with sarcoma S180 in vivo at the concentration of 50 micromol/kg, respectively. The remaining two compounds, bacopaside II (2) and bacopasaponin C (4) were found to be much less potent compared with 1 and 3. 1 and 3 significantly inhibited human breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 adhesion, migration and Matrigel invasion in vitro at the concentration of 50 micromol/L. Since no antitumor activities about the monomers from Bacopa monniera (L.) Wettst. have been reported, these results indicate that the mechanism of action of 1 and 3 needs further study.
PMID: 19960417 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
I was under the impression that the silbinin element of milk thistle was more benficial than the silybum.
I do have to wonder about the "proprietary blend" issue. At first glance, they aren't saying how much of each ingredient. Some supps are more "bioavailable" than others...curcumin especially.
But..I like the idea of combo pills to reduce the separate bottle overload. it's just harder to get adjust the amount of each ingredient.

Re: Ever heard of Prontandim?
I am just now noticing this. I have seen Milk Thistle and Green Tea on posts before. Has anyone heard anymore about Protandim, or tried it? I am considering trying it, and am currently looking at research on it.
Thanks!
