This is why I don't wear ANY make up and I've gotten to where I READ the labels and what is in EVERYTHING I buy. I have been buying organic EVERYTHING lately and the cereal bars and yoghurt Tony eats for breakfast BOTH use turmeric for color as well as all natural other products.

Back in then early 1940's to 60's, it was documented that children, esp. in England and the U.S., were suffering from a host of neurological disorders associated with playing on the side of the road, conditions blamed on "road dust". We all know that gasoline had lead additives that accumulated on the sides of the road and were ingested by children causing symptoms now described as Minimata disease; or lead poisoning. You'd think we'd have learned more in the last 50 - 60 years!


These companies should have their asses sued off!

Thanks Maryanne, I am sending this info on to my daughter and sisters and anyone else on my list, as if it's true it not only affects the one wearing the lipstick but people who are kissed by one wearing these lipsticks also.

According to Snopes, the watchdog site for misleading and false rumors, this is a legend, but I say sort of, because the "researcher" found out the FDA allows trace amounts of lead in the colors and dyes used in cosmetics, but amounts that of course are supposed to be so miniscule as to cause no harm. seems odd that they would be still using lead in anything, cant tell you how many times my daughter as a young child played with lipstick.

Before we wholly accept the story of lead in lipsticks, let us be sure that the story is totally true. In this day and age, I just have hard time to believe that lead is still allowed, even in minute quantity, in a body contact material. The story further says that by rubbing a gold ring with the suspected lipstick, the red color will turn to black color. I know chemistry quite well and the claim is hard to believe. Gold is one of the very inert metals. It normally cannot react with ordinary compounds, including lead. It takes nitric acid and hydrochloric acid to attack gold. This story is fishy to me.

For what it's worth, here's an excerpt from the Snopes.com article:

We spoke with a compliance officer at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about the possibility of lead being present in lipsticks. All dyes used in foodstuffs or cosmetics have to be vetted by the FDA for safety, and although some of the colorants the FDA grants approval to do contain lead, it is present in such miniscule amounts that is has no adverse effects on consumers. Manufacturers who wish to do business in the USA are restricted to the use of FDA-certifiable colors only; otherwise their products will not be allowed in the country or onto the shelves of American stores. Each of these approved dyes has its own rigid set of specifications which must be adhered to. For instance, F&C Red #6 cannot contain more than 20 parts per million of lead (also not more than 3 parts per million of arsenic or 1 part per million of mercury)..."
