Question low potassium- anyone else have this problem?

My potassium levels have been low, and this week my doctor has had me double my dose. He said earlier that carboplatin sametimes caused this but I haven't had carboplatin for at least a month. I am hoping this will clear up soon as theses doses of potassium irritate my acid reflux a lot. I had surgery for this many years ago but chemo made it flare up again. Any ideas?

My mom's potassium is always low when she's on chemo. In fact, yesterday it was 2.0 because she stopped her potassium pills for a few days. So she's going in for IV doses today. The docs have never had a good answer for why the chemo affects her potasium this way--it just does. The pills irritate her stomach, too, which has been hard on top of the xeloda/tykerb.

My pottasium level was very low too, they gave me it in an IV. I have had two rounds of Taxotere and Carboplatin and Herceptin. This was the first time my pottasium was ever low that I knew of. This is the strongest chemo I have ever been on as far as being very weak and just plain sick usually I bounce right back from treatments. I am not bouncing too much these days lol.

My postassium got low when I was on carboplatin also. They gave me some kind of liquid potassium at the hospital, when I went in because of anaphalactic reaction to the carboplatin. I haven't had a problem with low potassium since.

Cool I was told that having low potassium would be too risky?...

I can't remember, if I was on chemo, when I got attacked with low potassium. As soon as my chemo nurse read over my lab work, she entered me into the hospital via ER. That was several months ago. Since then, I haven't gotten any potassium issue.

I stayed there for a while (3 days, maybe?). They finally let me go, when my last labwork revealed improved potassium. To this day, I have no idea why I got low potassium... another puzzle jigsaw added to my life, oh great! <rolling eyes>

I was told that having low potassium could be dangerous; the low could induce you into a coma, or even die from it!

I would double - check with doctors about potassium.

Good luck!
