After 11+ Years My Port is Pooped Out & Update
Hello Everyone,
Went in for my Taxotere yesterday, and they were not able to get a blood return from my port. I knew this day was coming, because my port has been difficult to get a blood return for the last few years. Yesterday was different though, in that the nurse said it felt very mushy when the needle went in, and when she de-accessed it, saline was leaking from my chest.
So, after numerous attempts, they were able to get an IV started so I could still get my treatment. Boy, but you should see my poor arm today!
Anyway, I'm hoping to get a new port placed before my treatment next week, but am a little bit nervous about the new "power port" that the doctor wants me to have. Was doing a little reading up on them, and it seems some have had problems with them. My old one has served me well, despite being a bit finicky the last few years, and well......I was rather attached to the darned thing!
Also have good news to report.....
My tumor markers have continued to come down on the Taxotere and Herceptin.
The Her2 Serum is now in the normal range @ 9.2, and my CA15-3 is almost back in the normal range @ 35.6.
I have an MRI scheduled for next week to take a look at my liver. Hoping to see much improvement over the extensive mets they saw in November.
Blue Shield has denied coverage for the Perjeta, so looks like I may get it through Genentech which would be great, cause I'd really like to be done with the Tax-O Tears! I miss my hair, eyelashes, and energy!
At least we've got this cancer on the run, or so it seems, so keep your fingers crossed for me.

6/20/12 Tumor markers begin to rise. CA15-3 is 31.3 and Her2 Serum is at 17.1 Decide to repeat in one month.
7/23/12 CA15-3 now 49.3
Her2 Serum 26.8
8/6/12 Back on Herceptin
CA15-3 now 76
Her2 Serum now 49
11/7/12 Add weekly Taxotere for 4 cycles
2/2013 Stopped Taxotere added Perjeta. MRI shows approx. 50% reduction liver mets. CA15-3 still elevated @ 55. Will continue on just Herceptin & Perjeta.
November 2014 Continuing on Herceptin, Perjeta, and
Femara indefinitely. Guess I'm NED again, but watching those tumor markers carefully!
Dec. 2015 PET scan reveals mass in perirectal area of abdomen.biopsy confirms. Still Her2+, but no longer ER+. Bye bye Femara
Jan 2016 Begin Kadcyla
March 2016 PET scan shows tumor now barely visible, still NED everywhere else.
2016/2017 continue Kadcyla
November 2017 brain MRI reveals small focus of T2 hyperintensity with possible 4mm enhancing nodule. Short term follow up MRI suggested. Stay tuned...

October 16, 2013: Exchange surgery
October 31, 2013: Finished Herceptin
December 5, 2013: Port removed

First, great news about your tumor markers and prayers you get the Big P soon...hair and eyelashes are wonderful to have, even if they are very short...
Second, I had a power port and had no problems with it. It was removed after chemo and I get Vit H IV now. I have always had good veins so I wasn't concerned about having my port removed but....my veins are no longer as strong as they once were and part of me wishes I still had my power port. I also know a few other folks who have the power port and none of them had trouble either.

Nov 20, 2013: Tumor markers within normal limits. Severe Vit D deficiency, started on prescription Vit. D. Blaming chemo for this.

May 2014: Tumor markers within normal limits. Graduated to twice yearly onc appts.

May 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Bone density scan fine. Bone scan and xray of ribs shows "something" 4th right rib. Could be healed fracture but if it is healed why does it hurt?
Nov 2015: Tumor markers WNL. Follow up bone scan clear.
Feb 2016: Syncope! WTF? Dizzy too. Brain scan clear, ECHO EF 60%, Halter Monitor shows heart is fine. Viral? I will never know.
June 2016: Tumor markers WNL.
Oct 2016: Stabbing pain right eye. Long story short, trigeminal neuralgia.
Nov 2016 Brain MRI clear.
Jan 2017: Tumor markers WNL, still getting weird pain right rib area, and sometimes right upper chest. Xray x2, Bone Scan, Breast MRI all clear. Scar tissue? Rads. I may never know.

Dear Kim -
SO happy to hear you have some good improvement for all your trouble with the big gun tax-o-tears. I had that too, and more from that drug!
I think they have improved upon the power ports. I was not advised to have one since I am a fairly thin person and the power port was bigger than the regular Bard port. You might ask to see one compared to the regular one before they are put in. Or at least get the dimensions.
Hope all will go well with whatever you choose and with the scans upcoming.

Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Great news that your markers are coming down Kim. I'm sure you'll be fine with the new port - your old friend certainly served you well all these years. I've had mine now for over 5 years (not a power port) and it's been in continual use, and still going strong, but I do sometimes wonder when it will say enough! I would love to have my port in not such an obvious position on my chest though... Minor problem in the scheme of things really.

March 2014. Planned for SBRT for liver met, but couldn't have treatment as tumour too close to bowel. Continue Herceptin.
April 2014. Surgeon advises that I am a good candidate for liver resection, so will have operation early May (after camping holiday). Tumour now 44mm x 29mm.
May 7, 2014. Two liver tumours surgically removed. Third of liver removed, and gall bladder. Am I NED?May 2014. Pathology of tumour shows it's now ER+ (95% staining).
June 2014. CA15-3 has decreased to 18 from a pre-surgery reading of 59!
June 2014. Started Femara, continue with Herceptin.
July 2014. Stop Femara due to severe Osteoporosis. Commence Tamoxifen, continue Herceptin. Waiting to hear if I can have Aclasta infusion.
August 2014. CA15-3 has decreased further to 12 - YAY!
October 2014. Aclasta infusion for Osteoporosis. November 2014, CA15-3 decreased to 11. Scans of liver all clear, something new showing up on lung, but just watching at the moment.
November 2015. Started SBRT on solitary lung met.
November 2015. Bone density scan showed very good improvement so back on Femara - yay!
December 2016. 6 treatments of SBRT radiation on lung. Seems to have had some effect.
June 2016. CA15-3 still stable and low at 9.
June 2016. Started subcutaneous Herceptin replacing infusion.
Jan 2017. LVEF dropped to 46%. Stopped Herceptin.
Feb 2017. Started ACE Inhibitor and BETA Blocker. Still off Herceptin.
Aug 2017. Two new mets - Portacaval lymph node and mediastinal lymph node.
Aug 2017. Blood tests show extremely elevated liver enzyme levels. Many tests to investigate.
Sept 2017. Portacaval lymph node blocking liver bile duct causing liver enzyme and Bilirubin problems.
Oct 2017. 8cm stent inserted into liver bile duct. Procedure caused pancreatitis, and hospitalised for 3 days. Liver enzymes improving rapidly.
Nov 2017. Commenced 4 weeks of radiation on Portacaval lymph node. 5 week break before chemo.
Jan 2018. CT scan. 11 new small liver mets, and new superclavical lymph node med.
Jan 2018. Start Kadcyla. CA15-3 426.
Apr 2018. First scans since starting Kadcyla. All tumours reducing. CA15-3 dropped to 30 from 426.
Dec 2019. Still on Kadcyla, but two small brain mets have been treated in the past month with SRS. CA15-3 stable for 12 months at 11.

Kim I am so pleased to hear that your markers are coming down. I hope that you have good MRI results to match.
I have had a power port for nearly 2 years and have had no troubles with it at all. Sometimes we have a little trouble getting blood but it usually just needs a good flush first - I have found that dancing around usually helps too.
I have Perjeta coming via Roche here in Australia though I was due to start this week and it has been held up in customs. I am hoping to start next week.

January 2013 - herceptin, carboplatin and Perjeta (compassionate access)
April 2013 - Some progression in lungs and lymph nodes - Abraxane, Herceptin and Perjeta
July 2013 - mixed response - dramatic reduction of most lung disease, progression of smaller lung nodules and cervical and hilar nodes - ? Add avastin.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes and positive input about power ports. The one I currently have has really become prominent with just the thinnest layer of skin over it.
My oncologist said I could choose which side to put the new port on, and am thinking I will stick with the same side (mastectomy side, never had reconstruction) since I've already got scars on that side.
Also was looking at Bard's website, and it says they have a slimline power port, that might be a good option for me since I have so little fatty tissue up top.
Will let you know what I end up with!

11/7/12 Add weekly Taxotere for 4 cycles
2/2013 Stopped Taxotere added Perjeta. MRI shows approx. 50% reduction liver mets. CA15-3 still elevated @ 55. Will continue on just Herceptin & Perjeta.
November 2014 Continuing on Herceptin, Perjeta, and
Femara indefinitely. Guess I'm NED again, but watching those tumor markers carefully!
Dec. 2015 PET scan reveals mass in perirectal area of abdomen.biopsy confirms. Still Her2+, but no longer ER+. Bye bye Femara
Jan 2016 Begin Kadcyla
March 2016 PET scan shows tumor now barely visible, still NED everywhere else.
2016/2017 continue Kadcyla
November 2017 brain MRI reveals small focus of T2 hyperintensity with possible 4mm enhancing nodule. Short term follow up MRI suggested. Stay tuned...

I had the power port and loved it - don't be concerned - it is great at accomplishing what it needs to.

2/13/12 Last Herceptin/remove port
3/27/12 PET/Brain Scan NED :)
8/15/12 Final reconstruction - hello nipples, good bye expanders
9/14/12 Rejected implant/infection. Implant removed
5/6/13 Latissumis Dorsi surgery left side with expander
PS - my photo was taken 5 days after my double mastectomy surgery and 6 weeks after my TCH was completed

WooHoo! Sounds like you've got this ship turned around & are heading in the right direction 
Taxotere is a tough drug, but it's doing it's job for you and I just hope the SE's have become more tolerable. I'm hoping for the same for me.
I had trouble with my 10yr old port for the first time while I was in the hospital the other week & it really scared me. It was the first time that anyone has had any trouble at all with it & I feared that maybe it was the source of my staph infection & would have to have it removed & replaced. It turns out that all is well and won't have to cross that bridge and am so relieved.
I know so little about changing ports and have become quite comfortable with mine, because it's pretty well hidden as it's placed closer to my shoulder/armpit rather than my chest. Do they have to relocate the port, or can they just replace the old one with a new one in the same spot? Regardless, I hope the procedure goes easily and enjoy that nice, restful sleep during the swap out!
Hope that Pertuzumab is en route to you as we speak. I've had one cycle of the combo and was scheduled for my 2nd last Thursday, but have been granted an extra week off for my body to really recover since that first cycle really knocked me flat on my butt!
My hair started falling out much sooner on Taxotere than on any other of the many treatments I've been on. I guess I can let go of that pipe dream that maybe it won't fall out. Now that it's started and my scalp stings so much I just want it to be over.
So happy for your good news my friend. Keep it coming!

I'm sure whatever you decide to do about your port will work out fine.
I'm sorry about your hair and eyelashes. I HATED that part of this nightmare.
Hoping and praying that the Big P is running into that new port very, very soon.
