Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation
Announces NCI Grant to Fund Research

Erie, Pennsylvania - The Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation announced today that Steven Curley M.D., primary investigator of the Kanzius Non-invasive Radio Wave Cancer Treatment at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This grant, to be paid over the next five years, will be used for continuing research on the Kanzius Treatment which seeks to kill human cancer cells treated with gold nanoparticles without damaging healthy cells.

This grant is part of an $11.6 million NCI research grant awarded to a group of facilities including The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, to spur research in cancer and help create 12 consortiums of research centers to examine new methods of treating cancer. One of those consortiums to be created is the Center for Transport Oncophysics (CTO) at M.D. Anderson.

"By bringing a fresh set of eyes to the study of cancer, these new centers have great potential to advance, and sometimes challenge, accepted theories about cancer and its supportive microenvironment," said NCI Director John E. Niederhuber, M.D.

Steven Curley, M.D. will be co-leading the consortium. "This novel collaboration will help us sharpen a promising potential therapy that destroys tumors by using radio waves to heat up gold nanoparticles embedded inside them," Curley said.

Curley has been leading research for the cancer treatment approach invented by the late John Kanzius, a leukemia patient treated at M.D. Anderson and retired broadcast engineer before his death in February, 2009. The theory behind the treatment is simple: inject a patient with gold nanoparticles; force the nanoparticles into the targeted cancer cells; slide the patient into the radio field and allow the radio waves to penetrate the body, heat the nanoparticles, and cause them to kill the cancer.

"The key to making this work is to so precisely target nanoparticles to the tumor that you destroy the tumor with radio waves while sparing other tissue," Curley said. "The CTO will address that central issue."

The preliminary research shows that the Kanzius Non-invasive Radio Wave Cancer Treatment is effective: 100% of the cancer cells are destroyed, there is no damage to neighboring “good” tissues/cells, there are no side effects and no surgery is required.

“This is incredibly exciting and encouraging news for the Kanzius Foundation,” said Mark A. Neidig Sr., Executive Director of the Erie, Pennsylvania based Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. “An NCI grant positions our research work with a stronger base; one which makes a very loud statement regarding the credibility and validity of both our preliminary findings and future studies.”

Marianne Kanzius, wife of the late John Kanzius adds, “I am so pleased with the work that Dr. Curley has done to date and congratulate him on the tenacity it has taken to achieve this coveted funding. The NCI grant is a tremendous acclamation to his work and movement of John’s dream one step closer to reality.”

The work of the Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation is far from complete. The added funding to Dr. Curley’s research is but one aspect of funding needed to advance the multiple research venues utilizing the Kanzius technology and to secure FDA approval.

“The NCI grant was sorely needed and advances our work with vigor,” said Neidig. “However, the total pre-human clinical trial cost is upwards to $12 million so our work continues.” To read more about the NCI grant.

The National Cancer Institute has awarded a research grant of up to $11.6 million to a group of facilities, including Rice University and the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, both in Houston.

Part of that grant -- up to $2.1 million over five years -- will go toward research on Kanzius' cancer-killing machine.

"We still have lots of work to complete to get to (human) trials. Funding helps, certainly," Steven Curley, M.D., principal researcher for the Kanzius device at M.D. Anderson, wrote in an e-mail.

Curley was not available Tuesday for a telephone interview.

The NCI awarded the grant as part of a nationwide attempt to spur innovative cancer research. It is creating 12 consortiums of research centers that will examine new methods of treating cancer.

One of those groups is called the Center for Transport Oncophysics. It includes Rice University, M.D. Anderson, the University of Texas and Harvard University/Massachusetts General Hospital.

The group will focus on research projects targeting liver cancers.

"This novel collaboration will help us sharpen a promising potential therapy that destroys tumors by using radio waves to heat up gold nanoparticles embedded inside them," Curley said in a news release, referring to Kanzius' device.

Kanzius, a former Erie radio and television station broadcaster and engineer who died in February, invented the device at his homes in Millcreek Township and Sanibel, Fla.

It has been proved to completely kill cancerous tumors in live animals with no noticeable side effects.

Curley and his team of researchers, and another team at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, are testing the device on a variety of cancers.

Curley has said he hopes to have the device ready for human trials by 2011. It must first be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Our view: Kanzius' project on track to succeed

There's one sad twist in the recent stream of good news about the John Kanzius cancer treatment project.

Kanzius, a leukemia patient, didn't live long enough to learn about the new wave of funding for his external wave-generator invention. But we're sure that Kanzius would be delighted to learn about the good news delivered to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation in recent weeks.

A serious funding commitment is crucial for research to move the project from the lab to human trials, and to build the scanners. Kanzius envisioned his noninvasive treatment as a way to save lives and ease the hardships of current cancer-fighting regimens.

The recent funding news includes these developments:

-In October, the National Cancer Institute announced that it would allocate $2.1 million over five years for research on the Kanzius machine, which has been shown to completely kill cancerous tumors in animals. The NCI grant is intended to spur innovative cancer research.

Collaborative research at Rice University. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Texas and Harvard University/Massachusetts General Hospital will target liver cancers.

-Earlier this month, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development awarded $500,000 to help build the machines for use on humans. Industrial Sales and Manufacturing Inc. in Millcreek Township received $100,000 directly, according to Jim Rutkowski Jr., general manager, and an additional $400,000 will come through the Kanzius Foundation and M.D. Anderson. Human trials could begin in 2011. If the treatment device works on humans and if the Food and Drug Administration gives its approval, the project could create manufacturing jobs in Erie.

-Just two days after the state funding was announced, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $700,000 to the Kanzius Foundation for laboratory equipment at M.D. Anderson and at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, which is also doing research on the Kanzius treatment.

Credit is due to U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper, of Erie, D-3rd Dist., for pushing for the HHS funding and to State Rep. John Hornaman, of Millcreek, D-3rd Dist., for delivering the DCED funding news.

"These grants mean that people are noticing the work that is being done in Houston and in Pittsburgh," says Mark Neidig, executive director of the Kanzius Foundation. "The train is moving, and it's time to get on board."

Erie people also deserve kudos for their many contributions to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. Without such generosity and enthusiasm, the train would not have left the station.

And thanks, as always, to Kanzius, who engineered the project.

Kanzius cancer treatment nearly ready for human trials

Monday, the non-invasive radio frequency machine is being used by top cancer researchers to treat rabbits with certain types of cancer.
"The nano-particles release heat and the heat kills the cancer," said Dr. Steven Curley, Professor of Surgical Oncology.
And, he says, those nano-particles do that without killing any non-cancerous cells.
"We've proved we can deliver the nano-particles to the cancer cells and we also showed that this treatment has no major side effects," Dr. Curley said.
Now the next big hurdle is getting the Food and Drug Administration to give Dr. Curley the green light to begin clinical trials on humans.
Curley says he hopes that will happen within the next three years.
"We hope by the fall we'll actually be able to start some modeling on large animals," he said.
If all goes well, the FDA could approve the Kanzius Treatment within the next seven years - specifically targeting patients with pancreatic and liver cancer.

Re: Kanzius "machine" -heated nanoparticles

I saw this on 60 Minutes. It was very exciting to me. Mr. John Kanzius was an inspiration. This could truly be a breakthrough that we have all been waiting for. Just think, one could be cured and not have to go through all the surgery, chemo effects, etc. that everyone on this board has endured.
