Thank you to all beautiful ladies for responding to my "need encouragement" thread! I was able to get treatment yesterday as well as a blood transfusion which has given me some energy today! I am so grateful to those who give blood! Last night however was a nightmare...I had decided a few days ago to stop taking pain meds.. slow release morphine and faster acting dilaudid...Well I felt like I could just crawl right out of my skin..it was awful I had to keep rocking and pacing I wanted to smash my head into the wall!! My arms couldn't keep still..I was in pure agony..not pain but i just wanted to jump out of my crawling skin!!My poor husband didn't know what to do...He went on the internet and discovered that I was going through withdrawl!! I than took a dilaudid and one of the slow release morphines and made myself cream of wheat at 5am and started to feel human after awhile...I never want to go through that again!!! Who knew that after only a couple of months your body becomes so dependant, well I guess if I would of if I had given some thought to it I might of realized. DUH!!!..So I will ,continue with the pain meds at a reduced dosage I just don't think I need as much anymore. My GP also prescribed xanax for three times a day to help with anxiety which i think is better than the ups and downs of ativan wearing off, taking more, having it wear off etc etc...I think the steady stream of a light dose should probably work better..
Anyway I guess I learned not to stop taking anything cold turkey...It was shear torment!!

May '08 ca 15-3 is 55. Treatment is zometa, vinorelbine, herceptin and aromasin.
No signifcant changes.
Feb'09 Started Xeloda with herceptin..no more hormonals
Feb'09-June'09 tumor markers coming down again from 155 to 84
May'09 blood clots in lungs vena cava filter put in..Heparin shots daily for now.

Note to self...cold turkey...NOT good!
Except with a little mayo and cranberry sauce!

7/13/13 Symptoms return - back on steroids
7/26/13 Back on Avastin - try again!
8/26/13 Not ready to return to classroom yet :( But I CAN walk without holding onto things! :)

TM - sorry you had to find out the hard way that some of us are VERY sensitive to meds of any kind, especially opiates.
There are various classes of pain killers that work in different ways. Some are non-addictive, and most docs try to keep us in that realm. When we need to step up to a more addictive class, that should come with all sorts of printouts and warnings from our pharmacies.
It is necessary to read those and pay attention. We are not always in a place to make those decisions for ourselves.
Even though I still have pain in my leg, I just put up with it rather than keep taking even low doses of pain pills - I had plenty this fall.
Take care and good luck with the lower doses. Hope that will hold you.

MY STORY SO FAR ~~~~
Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

It's not only opiates that you can't stop cold turkey, many other drugs have to be taken in lower doses before quitting.

Glad you got your treatment, not so glad you went through that withdrawal. It's true that many meds, not just opiates, have to be whittled down slowly. Glad that you are back on track.

Let me add that Xanax is not be taken lightly either. It can be habit forming and needs to be discontinued gradually. Voice of experience!

Everybody is different too. I have been taking pain meds regularly but if I don't take them for a day or two, I don't get any side effects. It's strange as I would have thought by now I'd be dependant but apparently not. I went ten days without something I'd been taken for 30 years (for a different problem) and didn't even notice!

03/13/2013: Quit Gemzar, body just won't handle it. Staying on herceptin, zometa and perjeta.
04/03/2013: CT shows 50% regression in tumor, so am starting back on Gemzar with dose reduction, staying with perjeta/herceptin/zometa. Can't argue with success!
05/09/2013: Discussing SBRT with Radiology due to inability of bone marrow to recover from chemo.
06/07/2013: Fiducial placement for SBRT
07/03/2013: Chemo discontinued, on Perjeta, Herceptin and Zometa alone
07/25/2013: SBRT (gamma knife) begins
08/01/2013: SBRT completed
08/15/2013: STABLE! continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa
06/18/2014: ***** NED!!!!***** continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin, Zometa
01/29/2014: Still NED. continuing with Perjeta, Herceptin. Zometa lowered to every 3 months instead of monthly.
11/08/2015: Progression throughout abdomen and lungs. Started TDM-1, aka Kadcyla. Other meds discontinued. Remission was nice while it lasted.
5/27/18: Stable. Kadcyla put me right back in the barn. I have two teeny spots on my lungs that are metabolically inactive, and liver is clean.
I’m beating this MFer. I was 51 when this started and had two kids, 22 and 12. Now I’m 60. My oldest got married and trying to start s family. My youngesg graduates from Caltech this June. My stepdaughter gave me grandkids. Life is fantastic.
