Unforeseen Benefits to Hairlessness
Hi Gang! Please don't think I'm trying to make light of one's losing their what hair due to chemotherapy. I'm not. I know how women feel about their hair. Right now the "common-sense-Bill" is saying, 'what the heck are you doing, you idiot?' The other "what- exactly- is -common- sense -again? -Bill " is perched on the other shoulder, egging me on. Ok, I've faltered again. A year ago, I shaved my head as a show of solidarity for my wife, Nicola, and since then, I've sorta kept the style, and discovered some benefits to being without hair. I will list them, willy-nilly, and if y'all can add to the list, please do so. I save money on haircuts, shampoo, conditioner. Less time in the shower, lower water bills, and water heating costs, no blow drying, lower electric bills. People get out of my way when I walk through a store and never engage me with idle chatter. I don't have have to constantly adjust my hats due to hair growth, they all fit just right, everytime. I don't have to buy Drano anymore or fall asleep in a barber's chair, it's great. My dandruff is cured. I never have some random girl at the super-market running their hands through my hair outta nowhere and creating a scene. Actually, I didn't want to make this post, but some people pretty high up told me to. Love ya, Bill

Yes Bill, I know what you mean about the strangers in the supermarket. It gets so irritating when these hunky guys come up and make a mess out of my perfectly placed locks...lol. Your post just made me chuckle. It was a bit liberating being bald, it only took a minute to tie a bandana around my head and I was off. It did get awfully cold in the winter though. Although, you probably look quite handsome bald...I hopefully won't be joining you ever, ever again..sherryg683

Turtle Wax is cheaper than shampoo and conditioner.
It's more aerodynamic. You get increased gas mileage when riding in a convertible.
No one really noticed your cute ears before.
You can always use that nice shiny head to signal aircraft the next time you are lost in the woods.
Rent out the side of your head for advertising.
If the truth be told, Colleen is very tired of the slick and clean look. I tell her she still looks beautiful but she isn't having any of it. Its a good thing her hair is finally growing back in.

Unforeseen Benefits to Hairlessness
I love your way of thinking !! In these tough economic times you are saving tons of money you would ordinarily spend on hair care.
Being practical myself when I lost my hair I thought I would rather be hairless than be nauseous and have "internal" side effects everyday. Having a wig, some hats and head scarves gave me more options for the top of my head. Depending on my mood, I could go with a different style everyday and keep other people on their toes by having to figure out what or who they were going to encounter when I walked into the room. Hee Hee !!

Now that you mention it, when I was bald I did enjoy the feeling of taking a shower and having the water rain down on my head...I also appreciated the time saved by getting up in the morning, putting on the hat and bingo--ready to go! Now that my hair is back, however, I find that I'm a lot less concerned about how it looks on any particular day--I figure I'm lucky to have any hair at all, no matter if it's not doing what I want it to. No more bad hair days. (Bill, I know this is the wrong thread, but I wanted to mention how happy I am for you and Rita, you seem like a guy with so much love to give, I'm happy you found someone to share it with again. )

Bill you are too funny! Bald in summer does have it's benefits, but bald in winter in MN is too cold! A couple of weeks ago I was in a store trying on a sweater. I was not in a fitting room, just out in the store. The sweater was a cardigan so nothing over the head. I have no idea how it happened but my wig just 'jumped off my head' and landed on the floor by my feet. I nonchalantly picked it up & placed it back on my head. I didn't look around to see if anyone was stunned - I thought it was quite funny.

Actually i thought about it just a little while ago!
As I lay on the muga scan slab with my arms over my head, blankets all over the place with only my face poking out I thought, "wow, my hair is really gonna be messy after this".
Then it hit me!

I remember that NOTHING felt better than an ice cold washcloth on my bare head when I wasn't feeling well.
Funny story- During chemo, I would often try new looks- wigs (all colors), hats, etc. My husband never knew if he was coming home to a blonde or brunette. One day I tried this PLATNIUM blonde wig and wore it when I went to school to pick up my boys. One of my girlfriends called me the next day to tell me that my middle son, Ari, was soooo excited at school and told everyone that his mom looked just like Paris Hilton. Well, I thought that was hysterical. The next day was NOT a good day, and I could barely get out of bed to get them from school. I threw on a black felt hat, with no scarf underneath (so you could really see the bald head), no makeup or anything. Man did I look sick. When I pulled up in the car, Ari stood on the sidewalk horrified. I couldn't even get him in the car. When he finally got in, he told me I looked like Freddy Krugar (sp?). You couldn't help but laugh, you know?! I said, "What the heck happened to Paris Hilton?!?!?!" LOL
A bittersweet moment I will never forget.
Love, Kelly

One thought from me
I thought I would be devastated in losing my hair. I think that was close to the top of my list of things to dread prior to chemo. BUT....it was not what I expected. After losing my hair I found
1. a nice variety of ways to wear caps, scarves, etc. and it looked pretty cute!
2. i LOVED my wig!!! So much that I am considering trying to squeeze my hair now under my wig so I can wear it again when I want longer hair
3. I never realized that I really do look ok in real short hair. In fact it looks as good if not better then my old hair!
4. My old hairstyle was super high maintenence (flat iron, chemically straightened)
5. my new hair is SUPER low maintenence and it really looks as good as my old hairstyle
6. I do NOT have any desire to go back to what my hair use to look like
7. Bottom line....it all worked out real good.
