Something just hit me.
Been a little irritated. My son, who is super smart, decided that he's not going back to college this semester. Taking some time off to do nothing, that's what it appears to me. My little angel girl, is now a t'ween that is becoming mouthy and won't hold her mommas hand in public.
Just hit me though...Almost 5 years ago, I was told that I had less than a 20 percent chance of living to see all this wonderful stuff happening. And here I am, healthy and able to irritate the daylights out of them a little, or maybe a lots. There is hope!!!...Life is great!

3-23-10 Ten days of rads to RT femur. Completed.
4-05-10 Quit Navelbine--Herceptin/Zometa alone.
5-4-10 Appt. with Dr. Slamon to see what is next? Waiting on FISH results from femur biopsy.
Results to FISH was unsuccessful--this happens less then 2% of the time.
7-7-10 Recurrence to RT axilla again. Back to UCLA for options.

My daughter and son also took a year out but thankfully returned to their studies and my son graduated five years ago and my daughter due to graduate this Sept
I recall giving them both a hard time about it, but so glad to be here still to see them achieve this

Trouble with teens must be going around. My friend says her sons are just turning into lumps of lard and won't help her.
You seem to have a little more spunk about dealing with it. Keep up the good work and poke them whenever they need it!

Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

It's really good sometimes just to know that life goes on despite bc. My son is soon to start his final year at university and I drive him nuts telling him to work really hard to get a good degree.He is bright but so laid back (or lazy??). I remember one of his teachers who was always stressed out telling me that being a bit laid back is no bad thing in the long run.I have never been 'laid back' about anything and often wonder if the constant tension and stress was a factor in my bc.

I'm the most 'laid back' person you'll ever met. I have the same bc as you do. So 'relax' 'Getting cancer' has nothing to do with our personality or motivation.
I did everything else (choir, basketball, volunteer work at youth counseling center, etc)except studying hard in college. After another two years of 'searching', I entered graduate school and got myself a 'shining' transcript. It helped me to land jobs, although illness always set me back.
I think the constant 'nagging' from my Mother helped...

Absolutely loved your post.....reminded me of the saying, "Don't fret the small stuff. It's all small stuff!" After facing one's mortality, perspective is very different. Now, if I could just put that perspective to good use on a daily basis! Here's to your being around to irritate them for another 60 or 70 years!

Thank you for continuing to inspire and offer hope, Sherry. Such a great post! Reminds me to continue to be grateful for each and every day. I passed my "expiration date" in April of this year and life has taken on new meaning - every day is a bonus. Sometimes I get tired and complain, and then I remember what a blessing it is to just be alive. Thank you for that reminder. Long may you be able to irritate your children!

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2021 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

2013 April Herceptin- TDMI
2013 Sept Herceptin + Perjeta . CA2729 within normal range. Brain and Pet scans October 31st. will post results.
2013 October Brain MRI- mixed response. Will see Onc/rad on Halloween.
2013 October/November Brain-MRI nothing new. Repeat MRI next year in May.
2013 December Continue Herceptin and Perjeta. Stable at the moment.
2014 February Brain MRI -clear!
2014 January Added Taxotere to Perjeta+Herceptin.
2014 March Stopped chemo-chest ct-scan next.
2014- March Scans shows tumor's larger, CA2729 higher. Discontinue Herceptin.
2014 April Perjeta+ Halaven
2014 April CA2729 went down 60 points after one cycle. Cough does not want to go away.
2014 June Continue on Perjeta + Halaven-- no more cough. Stable
2014 June Back on Herceptin + abraxane

Hi Sherry,
Your post made me laugh (and cry!) My son just graduated from high school and has been having a great time this summer. Me, not having such a great time with the late nights and "goofing off". I have been nagging him about "buckling down" for college in the fall. He is pretty much ignoring me.
Your post came at a perfect time. I am so blessed to be here for all these milestones; over 4 years since my diagnosis. I too am stage IV, but doing great. My daughter is a sophmore in high school, so I still have lots of nagging to do. Thank you for reminding me how lucky I am!!

7/2010 Back to walking a mile a day...YEAH!!!!
9/2010 Nodes are back with a vengence in neck
Qualified for TDM-1 EAP
10/6/10 Begin my miracle drug, TDM-1
Mixed response, shrinking internal nodes, progression skin mets after 3 treatments
12/6/10 Started Halaven (Eribulen) /Herceptin excellent results in 2 treatments
