Thought

This section of the site has a fair amount of more patient specific exchanges. A lot of abstracts here ends up pushing those posts out of view. Maybe the articles or conference oriented sections are more suited to them?

Re: Thought

Good point, Rich. But I remember someone has pointed out before that most members do not bother to check other sections. As ASCO is the most important conference of our oncologists, I guess it is important for us to devote a few days to the new development in treating (breast) cancer.

Incidentally, Cure magazine also has a good article on a new chemo drug Bezielle (BZL100) for Advanced breast cancer. I thought it's important for everyone to read. So I'm putting it here as well:

More detailed information about this drug can be found on the link started by Rich in 2009 (see how knowlegeable our members are!

Re: Thought

It isn't obvious, but the idea behind having the articles section in a separate forum was to be able to keep a closer eye out for anyone, especially someone with a time-critical problem or question, to be able to get our attention ASAP so that they wouldn't stumble along for very long having no suggestions or help with it. I favor that approach on Joe's part, even though I agree with those who are naturally interested and excited about the posting of new choices or possibilities. Otherwise, as Rich mentioned, their question or problem can easily get lost in the shuffle, even though nobody intended for that to happen. I think doing that says something about this place -- that the focus is on the concerns of the people who come here in need. That is why the Articles forum is kept separate. Maybe posting a sticky note here to direct attention to new discoveries in the Articles forum would help?

I will never, ever forget Chelee's cry for help here when she was a newbie and was not getting adequate care in the medical system. Never. Her concern was intelligent and real. I hope we try harder to keep an eye out for each other.

Rich,

On other boards where I post and moderate, the moderators are more proactive about moving posts to sub-forums specifically designated for their subject matter, to avoid confusion and clutter. That has never been the case here, for better or worse. I do think that is one way to encourage users to look at more than one forum on the board.

I think putting the abstracts in the meetings forum will make it simpler to search for something when someone recalls 6 months from now that there was an abstract from a meeting on a particular topic - fewer results will be returned when the search is limited to that forum. So, I will continue to post what info I post from ASCO, et al, in the Breast Cancer Meetings Highlight Forum.

Wink Re: Thought

I agree with Rich. Those people who are interested in finding out the latest breast cancer news and information can simply go to the forums set aside for that purpose. Those who are interested in connecting with other her2 positive or IBC folks can go directly to those forums.
I understand that it may be difficult to decide where to post something we think might be of great importance or something everyone should read, but I still think each individual member should decide how she or he is going to use this site and should be allowed to decide what is important. I have found the large amount of scientific articles lately a little overwhelming. There is just so much time in a day. Some of us don't have time to read every single article. My reason for being here is to jump on, see how everyone is doing and then read select articles that are of special interest to me or that might apply to my personal situation. I don't want to read everything. I have other things to do on the computer and a limited amount of time to do them.
Just one woman's opinion !!!!!!! Take care everyone.
Have a good weekend.

Re: Thought

Well, I get your point, Rich. But I'm assuming that this latest clump of postings is pre-ASCO related, and I'm glad to see them here. I've become used to assuming that only the most-important research is posted on this main forum. Whereas the more minor things are in more abundance on the "articles of interest" thread (where I rarely go, mostly due to time constraints).

I like seeing things posted here that are not just FYI/read-only, but that are likely to stimulate discussion. I already keep up with the news, I come here for the DISCUSSION of the news. And I'm glad to see that on the main forum. I'm glad to see that all are exposed to the science of breast cancer. They are not forced to read it, nor forced to participate in the discussion. But I think it's good that everyone sees that there is a science at work here, that it's a COMPLEX science, and that there is a place for advocacy from survivors and not just researchers, when interpreting the science.

Re: Thought

I do hope this particular thread would 'remind' more members of the abundance of information in the 'Articles of Interest' and the 'Newsfeed' threads listed at the lower section of the Main page.

Sometimes we see duplicates - an abstract that's already listed in the 'Newsfeed' or 'Article of Interest' is posted again in the Her2 section. Oftentimes when I saw a good article and tried to share it in the Her2 section, I would find the article/abstract has already been posted in the 'Article of Interest' or 'Newsfeed'.

I've made it a habit now to do a 'search' first to see if the article/abstract/topic has already been posted somewhere on the Board. The 'Search' practice also helps me to find previous discussions on the same/similar topic and sometimes we can continue the discussion on an 'old' thread.

I've also seen new (or some old ones) members posted their questions/introductions in the 'less crowded' sections so they would be spotted more easily. Other members then would politely remind them to post their questions in the 'proper' section.

I've sent many 'private messages' to new/old members about how to navigate the Board. Most of them did not mind my 'intrusion' as a total stranger. It does take a while to get used to the arrangement of the Board and the habit of our members. But it's well-worth the time and effort...

Re: Thought

Perhaps we could post articles and news to the appropriate sections and place a reminder in this site, say, once a day or week? Like: I posted articles about X, Y and Z in the articles section. That way everybody will be reminded of their existence.
