Question Last time I will bring this up I promise

Now that I am finished for now with my treatments and will have my port removed tomorrow morning, my DH is really getting on to me about supplements. I know, I know, we are all sick of the subject. I just ask for help one more time and then I'm done, okay?
1 tablespoon evoo?
how much fish oil
what about coq10
vitamin d
I promise, I promise, I won't ask again. Just need to get my husband off my back. I know he only wants to help, but he had me at the health food store this morning and I was totally confused. Any Advice? Please???????
hugs

Try This Website

The internet is full of advice about diets and supplements for cancer, most of the information is misleading.

Here is perhaps the only reliable source for information from the National Institute of Health:

http://nccam.nih.gov/

Things to think about & ask your docs about any conflicts with other meds before adding anything.

I get confused on supplements too and so I take it very slowly, reading and asking my doc questions.

The one supplement I would recommend checking into is the Carlson lemon flavored fish oil. I have added this after many informative posts here and reading a great book for arthritis. The recommendation is 2 tsp. daily UNLESS you have eaten 3 oz. of wild salmon - then the fish oil is not needed. If you are like many of us you will try fish oil pills however there is a proper balance between DHA & EPA and unless the ratio is listed on the bottle it is not recommended taking them. My book recommends ration of Omega 6-3 below 5. R.B.' s post are helpful and again another resource I really love is Diana Dyer's A Dietician's Cancer Story. check out her webpage www.cancerrd.com

Happy Reading & Best of Luck.

Hi Susan,

I'll probably be as helpful as a fish out of water BUT I'll tell you what I do.....it's pretty simple..........just a little added benefit is the way I see it.

First and foremost, I exercise daily. Nothing major really - but get my heart moving. I powerwalk(and throw a little bit of jogging in here and their) approximately 4 miles per day (unfortunately this LONG SNOWY ICY winter I've done 2 a day - I hate the treadmill ) I also use 2 - 6.6 pounds handweights (one in each hand) to keep those arms toned etc. I do 80 reps (4 different manuevers x 20) I TRY TRY TRY to eat healthy and I do BUT I also eat things that I probably shouldn't - but am of the mindset that life is short so I treat myself (more than occasionally) with sugary treats, I eat whole grains (cereal, bread) blueberries, walnuts, almonds, veggies, occasional fruits, tomato juice, lots of water ...............................1 Tablespoon EVOO (when I think about and just realized I haven't thought of it in a while) 1 Tablespoon of ground flax on my cereal every morning, 800 micrograms of folic acid per day, 4000 i.u. Vit. D3 per day, 500 mgs. of magnesium daily and 1 Tablespoon of Nordic Naturals naturally flavored Cod Liver Oil with additional D3 (about 1000 i.u. extra) for a total of about 5000 i.u. of D3 (a little more) :-) (Here's the 3 smiley face I had to make myself)

So, I think I'm doing alright. From the looks of my "faces" here - I have 3 smiley faces (I had to make one of my smiley faces myself as the posting board would only let me use 4 images) and 2 sad faces - that says the smiles are winning so I must be too.

Good Luck Susan - it's a crapshoot pretty much!!!

Love to you AND Peace too.

Mary Jo

Wow, Marejo! It sounds like you're doing more than "alright", you're doing awesome! Another little trick I picked up from a book (sorry, Susan, no help on the evoo question) whenever you can buy the fresh cranberries, throw them in the freezer, then gobble down a handful or two every now and then, as a treat. (I know what many of you are thinking, "that's a 'treat' in your house? What, do you run a gulag?") Freeze your yogurt and eat it like ice cream. Nikki liked to peel her bananas, then wrap them in wax paper, then tin foil, and freeze them, then eat them that way. Love and prayers to you all, Bill

Thanks everyone for your advice. I at least have a start now. I will look this week for the things that I want to start taking. Like I said, I am off all the meds at this time so there shouldn't be a problem. Tomorrow at 10 am I'll be getting my port out, just a little nervous about that but sure am glad to have it done, it's like saying "maybe this is the end of this mess". I can hope.
Marejo, sounds like you've gotten it all together, wish I could get up the energy to do that much excercise. I'm promising myself that as soon as this cold Ohio weather breaks, I'm gonna start walking a lot. And thanks for the tip about the flax on the cereal, never thought of that.
Bill, I really enjoy your posts and am very thankful for your input. The frozen cranberries and bananas are something to think about too.
Anyway, I appreciate everyone here so much, so glad that I have you.
Hugs
