Ok, slightly stressed

I saw my ob gyn today for my yearly, before breast cancer I was treating for an ovarian cyst and stage 4 endometriosis, I had ultra sounds of ovaries every 4 to 6 months and was placed on agestyn for both which may have contributed to my breast cancer but no proof of that. I haven't had an ultra sound since last February cuz everything looked good but today he asked me questions that kinda scared me and is doing an ultra sound next week. Not even worried about the pap, YET. What concerns me is he said I am high risk for ovarian and uterine cancer since I have had breast cancer and I am on femara. Not sure but I think I asked my oncologist this question once and she said Her2 doesn't usually cause alarm for ovarian, etc. I could be wrong. That is all a blur these days. I said remove them and he said he can't without reason, say what? Just curious how many still have all there girly parts and should I be concerned? I haven't played freak out for awhile but I am today and I know this is probably stupid with so many others having larger issues but any input would be greatly appreciated. Should I be concerned? I asked him if he was asking me these questions because he felt there was something wrong or was he just being very thorough and he said some mumble jumble about being over 50, yada yada yada. Ladies?

Re: Ok, slightly stressed

Darlene,

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, I asked my neurosurgeon whether it had anything to do with the 3 'shots' of GKRS I'd received just 2 years prior. He said it's unlikely. And then he added: "People who have one type of cancer are more likely to have another type of cancer."

My reaction back then was: "How comforting!"

After getting on this site, I'd learned about the BRCA genes and later searched and found the HNPCC/Lynch connection that explained the multiple cancer incidents in my family: Brain and breast (me), Non-Hodgekins Lymphoma (Mother) and Colon Cancer (2nd Brother).

All of us survived cancer. Mother passed away nearly 2 months ago at 90 - 15 years after her NHL diagnosis and treatment (surgery, chemo and radiation).

I posted the Wiki link of HNPCC/Lynch at Lacie's Blogg, but it might not have gone through. Maybe she (and others) will see it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heredit...orectal_cancer

I had persuaded my oncologist to order a BRCA test after my recurrence in 2007. It came back with a tiny bit of a 'Variant of unknown significance'. I was given a genetic counseling session and was told just watch carefully. Once I learned about 2nd Brother's colon cancer, I requested and was approved (based on 'personal and family cancer history' and BRCA test result) for a hysterectomy/oophorectomy and have been feeling great ever since. (The surgeon said there's already 'hyperplasia' found on the lining of the uterus).

Re: Ok, slightly stressed

Hi, my Onc told me breast and ovarian cancer are closely linked so he agreed with me to remove my ovaries as a preventative, however it sounds like you've been watched closely with your prior issue's so I'd think this Dr was simply being extra cautious in view of the fact you've had BC, I know its easy to say don't worry but chances are all is fine and I feel sure he'd have said more otherwise.

Re: Ok, slightly stressed

I had my ovaries removed and the only reason was I am 50% ER+ and PR negative and of course Her2+. I was premenopausal and Tamoxifen does not work well in that situation. At the time, there was alot of data that AI's were more effective so I got my ovaries removed. You can easily go to another ObGyn for a second opinion. I really wanted mine out because even though I was BRCA negative, my paternal grandmother died of ovarian cancer. Get another opinion on this matter.

Re: Ok, slightly stressed

I just had my ovaries out 2 weeks ago - because this past May my annual routine pelvic/transvaginal ultrasound showed a simple cyst in my right ovary. Not a big deal for the general population, but my onc. and gyn. both wanted them out - they did not like "activity" in my now post-menopausal ovaries.

Combined this with a bladder lift that I had done previously in 2004 (uterus out then too), but it fell again due to chemo. At home recuperating, happy to be sans ovaries.

all the best

Re: Ok, slightly stressed

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'm confused why he said I am at high risk and is checking me for ovarian cancer but then tells me I don't qualify to have them removed. Ugh.
