Data delay for breast cancer drug
The promising breast cancer drug Herceptin is closer to being available to more Australian women with authorities due to consider its wider approval this month.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration said it was keen to fast-track an application to make the drug available, not just to women with advanced disease but to those with a type of early breast cancer.
TGA officials admitted their hands were tied until they had all the necessary data to support the application but manufacturer Roche indicated it would lodge these this month.
The authority is under pressure to approve wider use of the drug as part of a world-wide push to make it available to all women with breast cancer known as HER-2 positive.
Research shows it could halve chances of cancer returning.
The TGA must approve Herceptin for early breast cancer before it can attract Federal funding.
Coverage of Herceptin is getting wider. A few months ago there was a big spread in the Weekend Australian colour magazine about new treatments for cancer and Herceptin had a big write up. And a month or so ago there was a news item on TV here which featured the use of Herceptin amongst women here in the West who had either been on the trial or who were on regular maintenance .
Looks like the momentum is gaining!
