Diagnosed June, 06, Stage I, Grade3, ER+PR- Her2positive, No Nodes. A/C X 4. Radiation 33 with boost, Herceptin every two weeks until Nov.
07, Arimedex for 5 years. Mugas and Echo and chest xRay. Bone scan of whole Body, and Back of Brain and spine MRI.
CT scan of Lungs every six months
due to two small places. December
2009, bone scan due to bone pain.
Follow up test in 2010.

Hi Joan,
It is somewhat of a relief to get all the ducks in a row. Better than: 'what now?". For me, anyway. And so glad for you and your 'mesh mask'  Don't forget to get some type of anti-anxiety drug approved and at the ready. It DOES help.
One other thing I wanted to say. Although Steph, for one, had difficulties with necrosis after surgery AND SRS, another point that I've seen many times is this:
Necrosis is more common when larger tumors are treated with focalized radiation of the 'one shot' type, as only treatment.
As to what Brenda explained about her mesh form being adjusted around mouth, nose, eye area: Ask about this. If they are very experienced they will most likely be doing this as the 'norm'.
My CyberKnife Center was too new and the people unexperienced. My mask was too tight. I could not move my eyes under the lids, that's how tight it was. My lips were pressed against my teeth so that it hurt. But, my 2 sessions were for 90mins each. Not the shorter multiple sessions of the IMRT. anywho.....
I AM glad for you to have your plan in place and to have received such a wealth of support from those that have been there!

Hi -
Just one slight correction to Pattyz's post above.
I FIRST had the Gamma Knife - 56 minutes beams aimed at the largest tumor and 20 min for the small tumor.
Even the larger 3cm tumor was looking good (dying/shrinking) for the first year post treatment. At the one year scan is when it started to light up in the tumor bed. It was after that I had the open surgery to remove the tissue. The surgeon and my radiologists all said there was no good way to tell short of the excision what was going on in that radiated area.
When I had my Gamma Knife, it was over 4 years ago, so in the meantime there are newer and different treatments.
BUT, at the time I had Gamma Knife, there was a good study out that showed 90 or 91% success rate for Gamma Knife of HER2 metastatic brain tumors when they were 3 or less in number.
I found that study and brought it up to my rad onc who actually knew one of the study leaders.
In Joan's case I think she probably will not experience the difficulty I did since her surgery would be in the front area and a place where there is not so much movement of the head while healing.

MY STORY SO FAR ~~~~
Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Oh, and just FYI, Joan - I am now in the "mange" phase, post IMRT. I have some very lovely (NOT!) bald spots starting in the five target areas. And they are not quite as small as I imagined (hoped) they would be. Luckily my hair is just long enough to sort of cover them, but if a strong wind comes along, I definitely look like I have the mange... LOL.

Oct'08~ dropped Xeloda, switched to tri-weekly Herceptin in combo with Tykerb, extend to tri-monthly Zometa infusion
Dec'08~ Brain MRI- 4 spots reduced to punctate size, large spot shrunk by 3mm, CT of torso clear/pelvis spot stable
June'09~ new 3-4mm left cerrebellar spot zapped with IMRT targeted rads
Sept'09~ new 6mm & 1 cm spots in pituitary/optic chiasm area. Rx= 25 days of 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the tumors.
Oct'09~ 25 days of low dose 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the bone mets spot on rt. iliac crest that have been watching for 2 years. Added daily Aromasin back into treatment regimen.
Apr'10~ Brain MRI clear! But, see new small spot on adrenal gland. Change from Aromasin back to Tamoxifen.
June'10~ Tumor markers (CA15.3) dropped from 37 to 23 after one month on Tamoxifen. Continue to monitor adrenal gland spot. Remain on Tykerb/Herceptin/Tamoxifen.
Nov'10~ Radiate positive mediastinal node that was pressing on recurrent laryngeal nerve, causing paralyzed larynx and a funny voice.
Jan'11~ MRI shows possible activity or perhaps just scar tissue/necrotic increase on 3 previously treated brain spots and a pituitary spot. 5 days of IMRT on 4 spots.
Feb'11~ Enrolled in T-DM1 EAP in Denver, first treatment March 25, 2011.
Mar'11~ Finally started T-DM1 EAP in Denver at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center/Rose on Mar. 25... hallelujah.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2023 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

I had just bald spots from the 2 CyberKnife sessions. Like you, enough hair to cover those spots.

I had a herceptin chemo sister who a couple years back had some brain mets treated. Due to the location, her "bald spots" were along the top of her head from front to back. She called it her "NO-HAWK". But then, she lived in Santa Cruz so nobody thought it was weird.

Haha Chrisy - OK, picture if you will, my hair is about 3 inches long in general, fairly short (the same as it was last SABCS) and my bald spots are from 1. a rectangular shape that measures 2" height x 4" length at the "crest", along the right side above the center of the ear back to not quite the center of the back of my head, just on top of the occipital bone, 2. a 1.75" x 1.75" spot just below the left center crown on the back of my head just sitting on top of the occipital, 3. and 4. 2" x 2" spots that are behind each ear at the nape area just under the occipital bone. I have a layer of hair that sits over all the spots, but not very well... I have what looks like a new-wave hair-don't gone VERY VERY wrong. LOL
The reason I am laughing at your story is that just today I was thinking that If I shaved my head up to the crest and left the 1" ridge down the the center back, I could have a mohawk... make it kinda a cute feminine mohawk. That would be cool for a 49 year old punk like me, no?
