Hi Marejo:
Here's what I sent -- not much real info, but hope something here is helpful:
I don't really understand all of this, but I'll try and explain what I do understand. Unlike a lot of treatment, I've been willing to just take Vit D without much questioning (the Vitamin is cheap and easy to take and what the hey...)
Vit D DOES have something to do with Calcium absortion (and pre cancer my calcium was low.) My onc mentioned that the only possible downside of taking so much Vit D (and obviously I'm taking a lot now) was high calcium. I confessed I'd been forgetting to take my calcium recently, and since my calcium levels were now good she suggested no longer taking the calcium supplement, since it didn't seem to be necessary and she didn't want to risk calcium getting too high. By the way, I also have osteoporosis, although am athletic and healthy, (except for bc history, of course, ugh). So maybe there was some connection there, too. I don't know.
My onc wants to follow my D level through the seasons for a year or two and see how it goes up and down with sun exposure, then adjust my supplement level accordingly so it always stays on the high end of normal.
I've been reading more and more about breast health and Vit D, but I don't really understand the science of it. If you have any specific questions you want me to ask my onc on my next visit, I can do that. All I know is that she feels there's no down side to upping Vd levels and it could be beneficial.
Take care!
Linda
