Hi Faux Gypsy,

Please see posts on this site about osteoporosis and omega three. There are a significant number of trials linking lack of omega threes as a factor in osteoporosis.

Juices can be high in sugar and add to digestive problems for some.

Omega threes - in OJ - It all helps but I would guess to get 1-2 grams DHA a day you are going to have to look at fish oil / oily fish, supplemented eggs or vegetarian supplements.

There are some links on this site on tamoxifen and side effects if of interest as part of your decision making process.

RB, I am interested in reading your book when it comes out. I laughed when I first saw the orange juice with the Omega threes in it and then I thoght why not try it. I don't really like orange juice (it does tend to bother my stomach) but it is the only thing that I can put that potassium elixir in and be able to drink it. I will read the posts on osteoporosis and O3's. I never expected osteoporosis to be a problem. the bone density scan results really surprised me. I will check out the supplemented eggs as well. Thanks again.

Leslie

Thumbs up Omega 3's

Hi Leslie -
It does take some work to find a way to balance your omegas. One of the changes I made so hubby can also benefit are the "supplemented" eggs R.B. mentioned. There are usually 2 or 3 choices now in the better supermarkets. Even Safeway offers them.

There is even one with Lutein (good for our eyes) added in as well.
Cost is a little more, but we don't eat them every day so it is worth it for 2 of us. The supplemented eggs are often from free range chickens and vegetarian fed.

I found that after starting flax oil caplets (we use high lignan Barleens), my joint pains let up. Also, have you tried taking Glucosimine with Chondroitan for your joints. This compound strengthens ligamants and tendons and helps improve joint function. I used it for years and seem to get away without it now.

Good luck with finding a way to continue your Herceptin and finding a new med onc. Or at least a higher profile one that you can go to for second opinions.

More links between omega three deficit and bipolar

http://www.nature.com/mp/journal/v12.../4001887a.html

Dietary n-3 PUFA deprivation alters expression of enzymes of the arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acid cascades in rat frontal cortex

J S Rao1, R N Ertley1, J C DeMar Jr1, S I Rapoport1, R P Bazinet1 and H-J Lee1

Abstract

"The finding that n-3 PUFA deprivation increases cPLA2, sPLA2 and COX-2 is opposite to what has been reported after chronic administration of anti-manic agents to rats and suggests that n-3 PUFA deprivation may increase susceptibility to bipolar disorder."

Hi y'all, ; )I have been working at getting more omega threes into my diet. I don't at many eggs but that is one of the things I am adding. I am feeling much better now, I changed from the Femara to tamoxifen and am gettiing back to normal. I crashed for a few days, just worn out from it all. I am changing oncologists at the moment and have not talked with him in depth about this but I feel much more confident in being able to discuss things with him. Leslie
