Jane Tomlinson, who was given just six months to live nearly six years ago, announced today that she will be cycling across the U.S. this summer, starting in San Francisco at the end of May. She will probably be cycling on the back of a tandem, but still it is quite a feat I would say, having ridden on the back of one for a day. She is quite an amazing person and somewhat of a local hero here in Yorkshire.
This isn't her first challenge: she has also cycled the length of Britain and from Rome in the south of Italy to Leeds in the north of England, done an Ironman in Florida, and run the New York marathon. She didn't even start running until she was diagnosed with secondaries ten years after having had primary breast cancer when she was just 26. By getting sponsorship for her rides, she has managed to raise 1.2 million pounds (nearly 2 million dollars) for charity. For her U.S. run, she is raising money for UK charities and the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation (New York), with sponsors having the option to choose either U.S. or U.K. charities.
Anyway, her story is very encouraging and figured that you all might like to keep an eye out for her as she makes her way across the middle of U.S. and up the east coast from Washington to New York.
The story includes a map so you can see Jane's route.
