Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

Today was the first day since July '09 that I went out of the house without a wig or a hat. It's liberating and I feel like a new person!
Now, my next milestone will be going to work on Monday to hear all the comments. I can deal with that. Trying to think of a funny line to say. I've got another day come up with one.
Going thru cancer treatments is like school; there are many lessons and milestones along the way and when you're done, It feels really good.
One more surgery, two more herceptin treatments and I will be done with all the major stuff. I can't wait.

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

hi kris. i hung up my wigs on march 21 even though my hair was extremely short (it's still only half an inch long now). it is a bit of a challenge but, like you said, liberating. people have complimented my hair a lot (i wonder what would have happened had they not liked it?) so at least there's that, but oddly enough i get sick of people saying "you should keep that hairstyle" when i have so many more ahead of me. also, don't they remember the long-haired person i was 8 months ago? she's still in me. i have phantom hair syndrome and often go to gather my non-existant hair into a ponytail. it's so strange! i hope people are nice to you and that you don't feel too awkward. i haven't left the house without big earrings since the day i got called Sir in the grocery store. valerie

I'll make sure to wear earings so as not to be misktaken for a man (it's pretty short) and I like the'New style-thing' line for tomorrow.

Remember to enjoy this period of wash and go. In a few months on a windy day, you'll be SO happy for a wind-blown messy hair day. Relish each transition and the opportunities to try on "new yous".

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

I can count the number of times on one hand that I've worn my wig. I just do not like them and I'm always hot anyway. I used to clip my hair up all day.

I've been going out more without even a hat these days. I have these 2 spots in the front that are still pretty bald.

Good for you Kris!!!

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

Good for you Kris. My most favorite moment was dissing the wig in favor of a cap. The next was letting go of the cap. (Actually I hated the wig so much I only wore it to work.) Short hair is good!

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

Kris,
This is a big step forward. I remember when I put my wig in it's case...my hair was really short little curls (I called them duck feathers).
It felt so good to be without that darn wig.

Put on your lipstick and earings, wear a big smile
and enjoy crossing the finish line of chemo!

Best wishes,
jean

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

I'm loving your liberation Kris! Soon you won't even remember what it was like without hair.

Valerie, I also hated it when people commented on my 1/2 long hair and said I should keep it that way. UGH! I do think they were just trying to find something nice to say.

I was able to find a use for my wig. This picture was taken last week. The youth at our church put on a play written by a friend called "Is That You Agnes?" Our pastor surprised the entire cast when he showed up in this red dress and my wig! My hair, well this is almost one year's worth - without a haircut.

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

My response when my hair was so very short, "This is the new long."

I loved that stage, and you will be happy to have no fuss hair this summer.

I let my grow out little by little, keeping it trimmed and permed, since there is not curl one in my tresses without it.

Alicem is looking GREAT - and your do is becomming. I let my balding brother-in-law have some fun with my red "fun" wig. The family got a big kick out of that!

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

Kris,

I am sorry that I am just now seeing your post. I so know the feeling! I didn't ever reallywear a wig, because it was just too hot and itchy. Plus, it just didn't look like me (not that bald looked like me either). Anyway, I went without my bandanas for the first time in late February and had so many mixed emotions. It one sense it was incredibly liberating, and in the other sense, I, like Alice, felt my body clenching when people told me how cute it was and I should leave it short. Are you kidding me??? I had my last Herceptin three weeks ago, and my hair is still only a little more than an inch long, but at least it is hair, and it is MY hair, and that is a good feeling!!

A big congrats to you as you hit this milestone and the upcoming milestone of finishing Herceptin! I hope you have plans to celebrate!!! We had a big party, complete with pink margaritas, and our family is headed for a week in Turks & Caicos on May 30th to yell a big, fat, good bye to this past year!

Congratulations!!

Let's hear it for short and messy! I remember was at a party wearing a head covering and the other guests encouraged me to go without. Liberating is the word! As a bonus, I think most of us look quite cute with short hair.

Re: Gave up my Wig for a short Messy Hair Style

Thanks for the good wishes.. I am really enjoying my own hair. I really like the idea of celebrating with Pink Margaritas.. My last Herceptin treatment is on June 22nd -- my son's 22nd birthday.. Maybe it's a sign!...

Hayley: Have a wonderful vacation with your family. It's like a New Years celebration.

Kris...
