Moderated Chat Room #1 Supplement summaries and links

Moderated Chat Room #1 Supplement summaries and links

Flaxseed: has been shown to benefit both HER2 + and E+ cancers. The jury is still out on phyto-estrogens and their impact on hormonal sensitive cancers. Estrogens are very important to psychological functioning and physical wellness such as osteoporosis and neurological decline.

My main questions regarding hormonal therapies are:
  • Every therapy has its advantages and disadvantages, I wonder if all the negative repercussions of hormonal castration don’t outweigh the benefits of reduced cancer re-occurrences. There is tons of research that concludes that estrogen, in terms of homeostasis, in overall health both mental and physical, is #1.
  • The role of testosterone has not been addressed nor has testosterone therapy in light of aromatase inhibitors,
  • The additive / punitive role of phyto-estrogens and breast cancer. Do Phyto-estrogens act the same way as natural estrogens do? Personally I think not BUT we need research and empirical data that delineate the two.
A great jump-point for more flaxseed info: http://www.thensome.com/flaxseedlinks.htm

Curcumin: probably one of the hottest supplements in the fight, it seems to be the “golden boy” of cancer supplements. It is however an anti-oxidant (A-O) and the jury is still out on concurrent chemo and A-O therapy. Talking to Dr. Chad Larson, he dismissed the A-O / Chemo question by stating that “it’s like fighting a nuclear attack with a hand gun”, ..ie, does A-O supplementation really stand a chance against Taxol?? Some of the research says no BUT…I do remember n article on curcumin reducing the effacy of AC therapy. Is also a COX2 inhibitor and P13K inhibitor.

Resveratrol The primary ingredient in grapes and red wine, has long been touted as a tumor suppressor.

Blueberries: Nature’s #1 anti-oxidant has more than just protective effects. I believe that there is more to these little guys than meets the eye! When Linda was on the brink of death, I credit much of her recovery to eating 1 pint of blueberries / day.

Holy Basil: This one of fairly new to me but has shown anti-tumor effects but has a tradition of anti-cholesterol / anti-diabetes and anti-tumor effects. When something has been used over and over for the same reason for centuries (or millennia), it shouldn’t be ignored

IP6: well known for reducing liver tumors. Dr. Shamsuddin has been one of the chief researchers in this B-vitamin and its Inosital derivatives. This link speaks volumes and is part of our mandatory supplementation:

http://www.ip-6.net/secondpage.html

I3C: Is a naturally occurring “indole” in dark green veggies. It is metabolized to “DIM” by the sulphuric acid in the gut so older individuals who have a H2SO4 deficiency should be taking DIM instead. It has been shown as interfering with the estrogen metabolic pathway specifically stopping the conversion to “bad estrogens”. It has also shown efficiency with HER2 cancers. Another one of our 5-star supplements. Here is a link to 35 studies:

http://www.integratedhealth.com/infoabstract/i3cab.html

Rhodiola Rosea: an adaptogen from Siberia which has none of the major side-effects that Ginseng has. It is mildly estrogenic however. Great for energy and “chemo-brain” with anti-tumor effects:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=185745 1&dopt=Abstract

a great summary:

Cordyceps: Chinese fungus with anti-tumor, adaptogen and stamina building effects.

Maitake: an immune stimulating and anti-tumor herb:

COQ10: Must take for cardio health. The only supplement approved by the FDA to have positive therapeutic effects on the heart. Some studies have shown that high doses may have an anti-tumor effect. Another 5-star supplement. The liquid gel-cap has better absorption that powered product.

Artemisinin: something I am researching right now:

http://www.mwt.net/~drbrewer/canart2.htm

Milk Thistle An anti-oxidant for liver damage and rejuvenation. You know that all that crap we were forced to take as “medicine” was neutralized by our livers, this may undo some of the damage:

This link specifically refers to chemo:

Think about this one….. “the key that unlocks the door to knowledge is called confusion.”

Wow, Al!
You cannot imagine what a wonderful thing you have done in providing these links. I am a newcomer to this cancer thing as a patient . I am an R.N. and most of my experience is in the O.R. where we take it out and forget about it. I was in the chat room for the entire time amd I might as well have been listening to a discussion in Greek or some other foreign language.
I guarantee it won't be like that the next time thanks to your really beautiful job of providing information. I am one of the fortunate ones in that I am stage 1 and able to benefit from Herceptin (every 3 weeks for 1 year). I pray for you and Linda and all the others on this site.
Thank you again for the time and effort you put into this.

Where to get I3C, how much curcumin and maitake?

Just these three questions for now, anyone? Need a good source for getting I3C, my trusty has everything supplement store doesn't have it. Also, how much curcumin should we take? What I found is turmeric extract that is 95% curcuminoids, 475 mg per capsule from Curcumin C3 Complex, recommended dose on bottle is one per day. Maitake D fraction 30%, 18.3 mg. Recommended dose 20 drops, or 18.3 mg, but no recommendation on how often. Anybody care to help me randomly decide how much of these to take? Also Reservatol - Bottle says two twice a day. Also contains green tea. Looks like a good supplement.

Thanks

Still looking for I3C

I went to the anti-aging website above and they say that I3C is a discontinued product. Anywhere else?

Supplement Info

Hi Al. I'm no where near as knowledgeable about this subject as you are (a vast understatement), but what I have figured out is telling me basically the same thing in regard to cumulative estrogen deprivation. It is, of course, particularly concerning in regard to those who are still quite young.

Thank you for sharing so generously with everyone what you have found.
