Actonel, Fosamax, and other Biphosphonate users (Zometa, Aredia) CAUTION...

I wanted to repost this topic with drug names rather than just biphosphonate name class, as I did a few days ago, to catch all users of these drugs. Knowledge is power and I don't mean to alarm but please read the Annals of Internal Medicine May 2006 issue for caution while using the above listed drugs to prevent Jaw necrosis, otherwise known as Osteonecrosis as a side effect of these drugs. Further, these drugs take years to clear the body and SOME scientists argue on whether or not these drugs will ultimately increase bone fractures and problems with prolonged use.Anyone using these drugs must maintain meticulous oral hygiene and dental care, avoiding jaw injury and invasive procedures to help avoid Osteonecrosis of the Jaw. Please see article for more details below. Also, may view my other post on caution use with biphosphonates for more links.

PS.After reading this article, at least with osteopenia, I wonder if biphosphnoates are worth the risks when other alternatives to harden bone are available that are safer? Of course, if you have bone mets or severe bone problems, you may not have any other choice than to take these drugs with particular cautious oral care.
