New vaccine trial on the way

Dr. Albert Deisseroth, president and CEO for the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, San Diego:

"Clinical testing will begin next spring on a vaccine for treating breast cancer. The vaccine, which has been in development for more than five years, works by activating the body's immune system to suppress the recurrence of breast cancer following initial surgery. The process initiates an immune response against a self-antigen known as MUC-1. The antigen exhibits altered structure and expression in breast cancer. Injection of this vaccine under the skin can provide up to one year's resistance against the growth of cancer cells. The vaccine may be effective against other forms of cancer as well."

The clinical testing will begin in a few months in part to a $250,000 grant from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
