Recognizing that only 30-35% of HER2/neu positive patients respond to Herceptin, we publish the Cancer.gov database from time to time.

Two of our members, Barbara Bradfield and Ginger Empey had enrolled in the Phase I and Phase III trials of Herceptin and are still in remission today.

Joe, thank you so much for listing these studies for us. I had wondered how people find out about trials like these. I wonder if any of these would be appropriate for me to participate in since my last PET showed NED, and I have to be off herceptin now because of low MUGA and ECHO. It doesn't seem to me that I would qualify for any of the studies, but I don't really understand the process of selection. I would be willing to do anything I could to help cancer research along and I feel so grateful to those who have taken part in the past. For people like me who don't know the process, how does one go about expressing willingness to participate wherever appropriate? Can you sign up on your own or do you have to be reccommended by an oncologist or what? Thanks again for the information! Hugs, Tricia

Hi Tricia,

I've only participated in 2 clinical trials so far but at the end of the description for the clinical trial the sites were listed where the trial is being offered, with contact addresses and/or phone numbers so that I could contact and talk with the clinical trial coordinators. Usually there is a need for contact with your treating physician but you can talk with the coordinator first to tell whether you and they think you might qualify. Often they also list clinical trials that are not yet open as well and for one of the trials I was in, I called the day it opened because they were only needing less than 100 people nationwide to be in it. I was chosen and the trial closed very early. Be sure to consider carefully whether a clinical trial is being offered by a reputable institution or a reputable researcher.

Does the 30 to 35% response rate represent her2+ across the board or in the metistatic setting?
