OT: or maybe not, about coq10

Hi all,

Hope your having a pleasant Sunday, wherever you are.

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which is grim. I'm trying to help him make his way through all the hard questions about supplements, etc. His oncologist, not surprisingly, is dismissive.

My friend read somewhere that Coq10 might have some prooxidant qualities along with its know antioxidant ones. Does anybody know this to be so? Or understand? I'm not sure I'm even asking the question right....

Dear Jeff,

I met a man at Cancer Treatment Center of America who had pancreatic cancer. He was nearly dead when his wife admitted him to the hospital. They put a feeding tube in him and started him on IV Chemo, radiation and supplements. His tumor was contained in the pancreas, but it was pressing on his spinal chord so he was in severe pain. They fitted him with a portable morphine pump. After several weeks of treatment he improved. I left the hospital before he did, but the last I heard he took a motorcycle trip with his son across the country from Maine to California. I have no idea if he is still alive or how he is doing.

I also met a woman here in Ohio who lived for three years with advanced pancreatic cancer. She had surgery known as a whipple (?). I guess they remove parts of the pancreas, liver, etc. She quit chemo shortly after I met her because of quality of life issues and died 2 months later.

My friends father was dx. with pancreatic cancer and died two weeks later.

So you see all cases are different. I don't know about the supplements you asked about, but where there is life there is hope.

The story about the man riding his motercyce from the east to, California sounds like the man who, last spring donated his motercycle the to Wellness Community, here in Walnut Creek. If I remember correctly, he had suffered from pancreatic cancer, but was in remission. I remember being amazed that he had survived that type of cancer. Maybe it is the same person

Hi Karen,

I sure hope it is him. His name is Ken and his wife's name is Donna. When they left Maine to go to CTCA their friends said goodbye as if they would never see him again alive. They are both Christians and believed in miracles. Their hope was to return to their home and be able to say "I will not die, but I will live and tell what the Lord has done" (taken from Psalm 118). She also told me to read Psalm 91. Donna played guitar and sang like an angel. When his pain would be unbarable she would sing to him. What a small world if he is indeed the same man.

What a story! There are many incidences of people surviving "terminal" cancer. We don't hear of it very much because we always listen to the "norm", what is more "likely"...I heard once and I don't remember where that "faith is the antidote to fear". But the Bible says "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen". So faith is a GOOD thing, no matter what happens. It is also a very deep thing, not easily gotten by trying and striving, and chasing. Psalm 91 is great. You know the old game where we fall backward into the arms of a friend, this is how we sometimes are, falling into the arms of God and trusting.
