Oprah TOMORROW: Prophylactic Mastectomy & Cancer genetics

Dear All,
Tomorrows program on Oprah will feature Rene Syler formerly of CBS morning program. Reme underwent prophylactic mastectomies just last month because of family history. Her story was in the March issue of "O". Should be an interesting program. (The segment is called "Why I cut off My Breasts")

prophylactic mastectomy

I know that these boards have brought up prophylactic mastectomy before. I have considered it too for my remaining breast, but I am worried about stirring up something too with the inflammatory cytokines and her2. See link below for old discussion on phy. mastectomy.

Hi Robin,
This show was about prophylactic mastectomy for women who have a significant family history of ca. and or a mutation in the BRCA genes, not necessarily a BC diagnosis. Rene Syler formerly of CBS Morning show, was Oprahs' guest.Rene opted for bilateral prophylactic surgeries last month based on BOTH of her parents having had BC (she tested negative for BRCA 1&2 ), and her own history of 4 prior biopsies. The show was very well done and I believe they did a fantastic job of explaining the "basics" of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC), the risks of surgery and the entire decision making process.
