question on hip

Last summer I developed pain in my left hip. Mentioned it to my onc and he immediately ordered X-ray and bone scan. All was clear for BC; bone spur and arthritis was the culprit. That hip has done considerably better since.

This summer, my right hip is behaving much the same way. I do not have constant pain, hurts when I move up and down, sitting to standing etc. However, it does not seem to be getting any better using Advil or Tylenol Arthritis. Mentioned it to my onc and he offered scan, but I chose to wait a bit and see.

My question obviously is whether or not this sounds like bone mets. I hate to jump into tests and scans at every turn--but I don't want to miss anything either. Arimidex and Lupron contribute to joint stiffness--but this is a significant change in this hip.

I value you wisdom and support!

Sassy, Unfortunetly like my PCP likes to remind me all the time...the older we get...things start falling apart. lol I have no idea if it could be mets...but I do know BEFORE I was DX I was having extreme hip pain. I went to an Neurologist and he DX me with "Bursitis". Its caused from overuse, or lots of stress to the areas around your body's joints...which develop into painful inflammation. Bursitis usually affects the shoulders, elbows and hips. I've found the pain comes and goes. But when I have it....its REALLY painful. So lets hope thats all you have.

Or maybe your *other* hip was jealous and decided to get a bit of arthritis on that side to even things out. (I know...not funny.)
As you mentioned..I am sure the AI & Lupron your on doesn't help. I just hate having to worry about all our new aches and pains. Wishing you some relief, and answers to your pain. If eventually it settles down a bit...I'm going with bursitis. Hang in there.

Sassy
When your other hip was hurting, you may have overcompensated with the good hip...which is now overstressed and hurting...this is seen alot in knees, hips, backs....you favor the hurting body part and put more stress on the healthier one, causing fatigue and pain in that part...sounds more like inflammation than mets.....but as always, we watch and worry about things, and rightfully so. As my Dad always reminds me...old age is not for sissies!

Sassy, what do you mean by "hip"?

True hip pain is usually felt in the groin in the front--bisecting the crease which marks where your leg leaves your trunk (similar area where inguinal hernias occur)

Pain along the bony prominence which hurts if you lie on your side on a hard surface(if you are not "well upholstered") is usually trochanteric bursitis, inflammation in a sac of fluid which develops in response to irritation to try to cushion the bone below from the offending irritation, which can be from tendon rubbing or direct trauma or overuse of muscles which pull on the areas adjacent (usually a slightly different location, but may be hard for one to exactly localize without knowing the anatomy well)

Other causes of "hip pain", especially those not in the bisecting point of that crease are referred pain from the back, pain from irritation of a branch of a nerve from sleeping on one's stomach, among others/

Hip pain can be differentiated from other pains often because it is present with bearing weight on that limb and not when bearing weight on the other (in contrast to referred back pain), sometimes it can be differentiated by
assuming a marching soldier's position and turning the hip in and out by
bringing the sole of the foot from that position towards one's mouth or towards one's "sitting bone" or "bottom"

I would not venture to diagnose your pain, just letting you know there are a
lot of other explanations besides bone mets for your complaints.

Hope this helped!

Thanks for your replies guys. It always helps to get your opinions. Lots of knowledge on a variety of medical maladies. I'll keeping trying to sort out the cause of the pain--I hadn't thought of the overcompensation aspect.
