Peach and Plum extracts may kill breast cancer cells in future
http://aglifesciences.tamu.edu/news/6-2010-peaches.php
Breast cancer cells - even the most aggressive type - died after treatments with peach and plum extracts in lab tests at Texas AgriLife Research recently, and scientists say the results are deliciously promising. Not only did the cancerous cells keel over, but the normal cells were not harmed in the process.

May'07~ Started Tykerb/Xeloda, no WBR for now
June'07~ MRI - stable brain mets, no new mets, 9mm spots less enhanced, CA15.3 down 45.5 to 9.3 in 10 wks, Ty/Xel working magic!
Aug'07~ MRI - brain mets shrunk half, NO NEW BRAIN METS!!, TMs stable @ 9.2
Oct'07~ PET/CT & MRI show NED
Apr'08~ scans still show NED in the head, small bone spot on right iliac crest (rear pelvic bone)
Sept'08~ MRI shows activity in brain mets, completed 5 fractions/5 consecutive days of IMRT to zap the pesky buggers
Oct'08~ dropped Xeloda, switched to tri-weekly Herceptin in combo with Tykerb, extend to tri-monthly Zometa infusion
Dec'08~ Brain MRI- 4 spots reduced to punctate size, large spot shrunk by 3mm, CT of torso clear/pelvis spot stable
June'09~ new 3-4mm left cerrebellar spot zapped with IMRT targeted rads
Sept'09~ new 6mm & 1 cm spots in pituitary/optic chiasm area. Rx= 25 days of 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the tumors.
Oct'09~ 25 days of low dose 3D conformal fractionated targeted IMRT to the bone mets spot on rt. iliac crest that have been watching for 2 years. Added daily Aromasin back into treatment regimen.
Apr'10~ Brain MRI clear! But, see new small spot on adrenal gland. Change from Aromasin back to Tamoxifen.
June'10~ Tumor markers (CA15.3) dropped from 37 to 23 after one month on Tamoxifen. Continue to monitor adrenal gland spot. Remain on Tykerb/Herceptin/Tamoxifen.
Nov'10~ Radiate positive mediastinal node that was pressing on recurrent laryngeal nerve, causing paralyzed larynx and a funny voice.
Jan'11~ MRI shows possible activity or perhaps just scar tissue/necrotic increase on 3 previously treated brain spots and a pituitary spot. 5 days of IMRT on 4 spots.
Feb'11~ Enrolled in T-DM1 EAP in Denver, first treatment March 25, 2011.
Mar'11~ Finally started T-DM1 EAP in Denver at Rocky Mountain Cancer Center/Rose on Mar. 25... hallelujah.

Re: Peach and Plum extracts may kill breast cancer cells in future
Here is the study.
J Agric Food Chem. 2009 Jun 24;57(12):5219-26.
Identifying peach and plum polyphenols with chemopreventive potential against estrogen-independent breast cancer cells.
Noratto G, Porter W, Byrne D, Cisneros-Zevallos L.
Department of Horticultural Sciences and Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas 77843, USA.
Abstract
Our objective was to evaluate the cancer suppression activity of extracts from a commercial variety of yellow-fleshed peach 'Rich Lady' (RL) and a red-fleshed plum 'Black Splendor' (BS) and identify the phenolic fractions that may possess potential as chemopreventive and/or chemotherapeutic natural compounds. The peach RL extract effectively inhibited the proliferation of the estrogen-independent MDA-MB-435 breast cancer cell line. The concentration to inhibit 50% of cell proliferation (IC(50)) was approximately 42 mg/L for this cell line compared to an IC(50) of approximately 130 and approximately 515 mg/L for the noncancerous breast cell line MCF-10A and the estrogen-dependent breast cancer cell line MCF-7, respectively. Similarly, BS extracts showed greater effects on MDA-MB-435 cells as compared to the other breast cancer or the normal breast cell lines. In general, BS extracts were less effective than RL extracts. Within all RL and BS fractions, fraction 3 (F3, flavonoids) and fraction 4 (F4, procyanidins) were more potent than fraction 1 (F1, phenolic acids) and fraction 2 (F2, anthocyanins) against the three cell lines. The order of potency of RL fractions against MDA-MB-435 was F(3) approximately F(4) > F(1) > F(2). The antiproliferative activity of pure compounds identified in F(3) and F(1) confirmed that quercetin 3beta-glucoside is the bioactive compound in F(3), with the same level of toxicity on the estrogen-independent MDA-MB-435 breast cancer and breast epithelial MCF-10A cells (IC(50) = 1.9 +/- 0.2 and 1.8 +/- 0.3, respectively). However, we confirmed that phenolic acids present in F(1): chlorogenic and neo-chlorogenic acids have potential as chemopreventive dietary compounds because of the relatively high growth inhibition exerted on the estrogen-independent MDA-MB-435 breast cancer cell line and low toxicity exerted in the normal MCF-10A cells.
PMID: 19530711 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
Note that it mentions a form of Quercetin in there.
I will say that I was viewing Quercetin favorably until I encountered various studies suggesting it can be estrogenic. In other cases, like apigenin, the helpful component can be estrogenic at one dose and estrogen inhibiting at another. It seems the supplement side is much more complicated in ER+ situations.

Re: Peach and Plum extracts may kill breast cancer cells in future
This is right in line with what Dr. David Sevan Schrieber talks about in his book - Anticancer (a MUST read). (Thanks for recommending it, EllieF!). He says "stone fruits" such as peaches and plums have incredible anti-cancer properties. I've been eating as much as I can lately since they are in season right now where I live (California). Happy stone fruit eating! Maybe I'll pick up some extract too.
Thanks for posting, Brenda! I love the idea of eating my way healthy.

Re: Peach and Plum extracts may kill breast cancer cells in future
This is exciting news! To be able to kill the cancer cells and not the healthy cells - what a great idea! Thanks for the info!
