warm weather (bisphenol) reminder

Just occurred to me that summer weather might mean more temptation to drink from plastic bottles that may have chemo conflicting bisphenol in them. Maybe they changed the plastics but I'm not sure.

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used in the manufacture of polycarbonate plastics, including infant formula bottles. OBJECTIVES: Based on the reported endocrine disruptor activity of this polyphenol, we hypothesized that exposure to BPA early in life would elicit developmental changes in the mammary tissue and cause a predisposition for mammary cancer. METHODS: We exposed neonatal/prepubertal rats to BPA via lactation from nursing dams treated orally with 0, 25, and 250 mug BPA/kg body weight/day. For tumorigenesis studies, female offspring were exposed to 30 mg dimethylbenzanthracene (DMBA)/kg body weight at 50 days of age. RESULTS: The combination of DMBA treatment with lactational exposure to BPA demonstrated a dose-dependent increase in mammary tumor multiplicity and reduced tumor latency compared with controls. In the absence of DMBA treatment, lactational BPA exposure resulted in increased cell proliferation and decreased apoptosis at 50 but not 21 days postpartum (shortly after last BPA treatment). Using Western blot analysis, we determined that steroid receptor coactivators (SRCs) 1-3, Akt, phosphorylated Akt, progesterone receptor A (PR-A), and erbB3 proteins were significantly up-regulated at 50 days of age. CONCLUSIONS: The data presented here provide the first evidence that maternal exposure to BPA during lactation increases mammary carcinogenesis in a DMBA-induced model of rodent mammary cancer. Changes in PR-A, SRC 1-3, erbB3, and Akt activity are consistent with increased cell proliferation and decreased apoptosis playing a role in mammary cancer susceptibility. These alterations provide an explanation of enhanced mammary carcinogenesis after lactational BPA exposure.

Canned Food May Expose People to BPA

A study conducted by a coalition of consumer and food safety groups found detectable levels of BPA in 46 of 50 grocery store cans tested. The results suggest BPA routinely leaches from can linings into food.
BPA has been associated with a variety of health problems in laboratory animals, including cancers, early puberty, and developmental problems.
The highest BPA level detected was 1,140 parts per billion, found in a can of Del Monte French Style Green Beans obtained from the pantry of a study participant in Wisconsin.

Thanks for the reminder. I have been using a stainless steel water bottle and trying to eat fresh vegetables or frozen ones.

I would guess the long term storage in BPA containers is the main issue. probably not a problem pouring into a BPA mug if consumed soon thereafter.

But this info on cans ticks me off.
As a long term cook for one, I have really grown accustomed to canned goods. Who knows how long food sits in those potentially BPA lined cans.
If Del Monte is doing it, it might be fairly standard practice. Maybe not rising to the level of "crap on a crapstick"..but crap nonetheless.
I wonder how easy it will be to find out which cans have the crap.

As for the drink bottles, I believe containers carrying the recycle label with 1 (PET), 2 (HDPE) , and 5 (polypropylene) are BPA free. But since cans aren't labeled, I will start looking for what I can buy in glass. This whole BPA business makes me wonder what FDA is good for at times.

Abstract

There are many subclones of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells that respond to different levels of estrogen and that have been used for evaluating the estrogenic potential of environmental chemicals such as bisphenol A. In this study, I examined the effects of melatonin, an endogenous growth-inhibitory hormone, on the bisphenol A-induced proliferation of an MCF-7 subclone, designated as MCF-7-EMF cells. MCF-7-EMF cell growth was extremely slow in the presence of either estrogen at 10(-7) M or bisphenol A at 10(-7) M in a phenol-red-free medium and 10% charcoal-stripped fetal bovine serum. It was difficult to detect the increment of BrdU incorporation in MCF-7-EMF cells (2x10(4) cells) upon exposure to 10(-7) M bisphenol A alone for up to 50 h. The same result was obtained with cells exposed to 10 ng/ml insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) alone for up to 50 h. However, in the presence of 10 ng/ml IGF-1, bisphenol A markedly increased cell proliferation. The synergistic response was transiently inhibited by 10(-10) M melatonin (p<0.05). Thus, melatonin caused a transient inhibition of cell growth of estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha)-positive MCF-7-EMF cells induced synergistically by both IGF-1 and bisphenol A.

I think most of the stainless drinking containers have a chemical application on the interior lining. Not certain if that has been removed yet, but I know it was being challenged. I drink from empty SoBe bottles that my son has purchased and that I save and reuse. They are 20 oz bottles, so they are dandy! Another glass bottle is Snapple teas. I do not drink these beverages, but my kids buy them occasionally and I snag the empty bottles with their lids and use them until I manage to drop them. Some beverages are going to plastics so I have been saving up! Seriously! I wish milk still came in bottles! I prefer glass to everything.
