Of interest:
"Results: We demonstrated that irradiated CICs (cancer initiating cells) survived and retained their self- renewal capacity for at least 4 generations. We showed that fractionated radiation not only spared CICs but also mobilized CICs from a quiescent/GO phase of the cell cycle into actively cycling cells while the surviving non-tumorogenic cells were driven into senesence.
Conclusion: We conclude that increases in the number of cancer initiating cells after sublethal does of radiation are potentially of clinical importance because the CIC subpopulation retains increased self-renewal capacity over several generations. Prevention of this process may therefore lead to improved clinical outcome."
