how herceptin works

can some one please explain how does herceptin continue to keep NED after we complete a yr of treatment. I understand that it attaches to cancer cells but after the yr of treatment are we to assume there are no more cancer cells. Would it not make more sense to have a protocal that has pts receive herceptin on and off for several yrs giving the heart a chance to recover while still offering the protection that is needed.
just trying to understand how best to stay ahead of this...

to stop taking it after a year if we don't have mets.

4 FAC, 4 Taxol, no radiation
1 year of Herceptin
Tamoxifen for approx. 4 months,
Arimidex for 5 years
Prophylactic mastectomy June 22/09
