Yoga

I just started taking yoga about 6 months ago. I started around the time I began chemo. Just wanted to mention how extremely beneficial it is, esp while undergoing chemo! It has also been very constructive for body after my mastectomy/reconstruction which was done 11/06.
The stretching, twisting, getting the toxins released from various parts of the body, the concentration on releasing thoughts out of my mind and giving my mind a well-needed break, are just some of the benefits I have received.
I have always been an active person physically, but yoga provides something that was lacking previously.
Highly recommended.

Hi Harrie,

I too have been doing yoga for the past year. Always did aerobics and weights, but I love the spiritual peace and physical release I feel with my yoga practice. I would highly recommend to all women on this site.

yoga

I have always wanted to try it and have gone so far as to research where I can have classes. My problem is... with whcih type of yoga should I start . I am active but currently just walking after finishing my TCH. My Heart is good and my career keeps me moving not sitting behind a desk. Any suggestions?

I am new at yoga and so am not all that familiar with all the different types. I just picked this place that has a good reputation in my town and there are not many to select from. If you go to: yogacentered.com you can see where I go.

There is a very "low impact" yoga class offered at my local Comprehensive Cancer Center. I began last week. Felt really out of shape! But OT recommended it especially for the stretching. But probably a program associated with a health facility would be the most medically oriented.

My yoga instructor talked with me before starting the beginner's classes. She teaches a restorative style of yoga called Iyengar. She is trained in special needs (injuries, physical limitations, diseases, etc) and one thing she told me is that a cancer patient who is in chemo treatment shouldn't let their core temp get too hot. So during the classes, if we start doing moves that make me start sweating or feel like I am having a hot flash, she wants me to sit that series out. She has a few resting moves that she has taught me instead for those time. (I haven't been for a couple of months, but will start back next month)

I initially learned about Iyengar yoga after reading more about Lynn Kohlman's BC story... Google her, she is Donna Karan's (DKNY) best friend.

core temp

Brenda, that is very interesting about not letting the core temp get too hot. I didn't know that. Those rooms can get quite warm and tend to like to sweat when I work out. Some schools (not mine) actually put heaters in the room when people do their yoga so I've heard.
Good thing I am done with chemo so I don't have to worry about the core temp.
