Tumour marker test results!!!!!!
Ok, now I'm freaking out.
I had tumor marker tests last year BEFORE I had the surgery to remove the tumor. The results then were:

Cancer Antigen 125
Result: 7.8 Anything over 35 is considered high
~~~~
Carcinoembryonic Antigen
Result: 1.1 Anything over 4 is flagged as high
~~~
Cancer Antigen 15-3
Result: 19 Anything over 28 is flagged
Ok this is why I'm freaking. The results just came back for the same tests, minus the tumor. Is this a normal trend? HELP?!!!!
Cancer Antigen 125 - Result 8 (up from 7.8 last year)
Cancer Antigen 15-3 -Result 22 (up from 19 last year)
Carcinoembryonic Antigen -Result: 1.4 (up from 1.1 last year)
Why is the trend not either the same or down rather than up? Oh Lord............

Finished #16 Herceptin Sept. 09. AI's and Tamoxifen made me sick. Began natural Tamoxifen which is Quercetin, I3C and a combo of other supplements. I am also a DES Daughter. There is now a link between DES exposure in utero and breast cancer!

No need to freak out...were you on antibiotics or sick when the latest markers were taken? I get alot of sinus infections and am frequently on antibiotics and they seem to make the numbers go up a little. Since your markers are within normal range, I wouldn't worry too much about the slight increase in the numbers.

Navelbine (3 wks on/1 wk off) as of Oct--2006 & continued Herceptin (every 3 wks) & Zometa (every 6 wks)
Jan-2007: PET/CT Scan - Stable. Continued Nav. through March-2007, then Herc./Zom. only after that.
June-2007: PET/CT Scan - activity in mediastinum. Back on Navelbine as of July-2007.
Scanned Quarterly since Oct-2007 - a few small scares, but otherwise stable due to continuing weekly Navelbine, Herceptin and Quarterly Zometa.

Hi Colleen,
No, I have not been on antibiotics since January. I don't feel sick. Mentally and emotionally, that's another story. Can stress affect these tests?
I have a kidney stone and a higher creatinine level than normal but I don't know if this would affect these tests.

Oh no no no no no...No freaking out allowed. All are within normal range, and are only slightly up from the earlier readings. Many things can cause these to fluctuate, and for many people these are not "useful" markers anyway. What is important on these is if you see a steady trend upwards.
This is "not meaningful"...try not to stress out about it!

if you read about these tests, you will find that it is very normal for them to fluctuate up and down; as long as they are below normal or near normal (even if slightly above), doctors don't get concerned.

Hi Colleen -
most doctors would say that such a slight change is "not significant."
A couple tenths of a point can be due to any number of causes. Even lab tech or testing changes.
Check them again in 6 months and save any freaking out for later at such time the numbers might change and go closer to being out of normal. I think chances are good that is not going to happen!

Found suspicious lump 9/2000
Lumpectomy, then node dissection and port placement
Stage IIB, 8 pos nodes of 18, Grade 3, ER & PR -
Adriamycin 12 weekly, taxotere 4 rounds
36 rads - very little burning
3 mos after rads liver full of tumors, Stage IV Jan 2002, one spot on sternum
Weekly Taxol, Navelbine, Herceptin for 27 rounds to NED!
2003 & 2004 no active disease - 3 weekly Herceptin + Zometa
Jan 2005 two mets to brain - Gamma Knife on Jan 18
All clear until treated cerebellum spot showing activity on Jan 2006 brain MRI & brain PET
Brain surgery on Feb 9, 2006 - no cancer, 100% radiation necrosis - tumor was still dying
Continue as NED while on Herceptin & quarterly Zometa
Fall-2006 - off Zometa - watching one small brain spot (scar?)
2007 - spot/scar in brain stable - finished anticoagulation therapy for clot along my port-a-catheter - 3 angioplasties to unblock vena cava
2008 - Brain and body still NED! Port removed and scans in Dec.
Dec 2008 - stop Herceptin - Vaccine Trial at U of W begun in Oct. of 2011
STILL NED everywhere in Feb 2014 - on wing & prayer
7/14 - Started twice yearly Zometa for my bones
Jan. 2015 checkup still shows NED
2015 Neuropathy in feet - otherwise all OK - still NED.
Same news for 2016 and all of 2017.
Nov of 2017 - had small skin cancer removed from my face. Will have Zometa end of Jan. 2018.

Please don't freak out. Maybe there was a bit of temporary inflamation after the surgery. Inflamation can raise tumor markers. Perhaps waiting a few weeks and repeating the tests would be a good idea.

Really....no need to freak out.
During a conversation with my Onc regarding tumor markers she informed me that she has tried to limit the frequency of tumor marker testing she performs as the swings in the results causes undue concern.
These are great results, well within range...take a deep breath and enjoy every moment of life. Don't waste it on these test results. (I know...easier said than done)

I know how you feel. Before my bc cancer spread, I used to freak out if my tumor markers went up, even if they were still within the normal range. But the docs were not concerned since the markers were in normal limits.
I just had my markers done again recently, and they're normal, as usual. In fact, they've never been out of the normal range even though my cancer has spread to my lung and brain.
Try not to worry. I calm myself down by saying: at this moment I'm free of cancer, and until another test shows otherwise, I'm going to live in that freedom.

Diagnosed stage 2b in July 2003 (2.3 cm, HER2+, ER-/PR-, 7+ nodes). Treated with mastectomy (with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction), AC + T/Herceptin (off label). Cancer advanced to lung in Jan. 2007 (1 cm nodule). Started Herceptin every 3 weeks. Lung wedge resection April 2007. Cancer recurred in lung April 2008. RFA of lung in August 2008. 2nd annual brain MRI in Oct. 2008 discovered 2.6 cm cystic tumor in left frontal lobe. Craniotomy Oct. 2008 (ER-/PR-/HER2-) followed by targeted radiation (IMRT). Coughing up blood Feb. 2009. Thoractomy July 2009 to cut out fungal ball of common soil fungus (aspergillus) that grew in the RFA cavity (most likely inhaled while gardening). No cancer, only fungus. Removal of tiny melanoma from upper left arm, plus sentinel lymph node biopsy in Feb. 2016. Guardant Health liquid biopsy in Feb. 2016 showed mutations in 4 subtypes of TP53. Repeat of Guardant Health biopsy in Jana. 2021 showed 3 TP53 mutations, BRCA1 mutation and CHEK2 mutation. Invitae genetic testing showed negative for all of these. Living with MBC since 2007. Stopped Herceptin Hylecta (injection) treatment in March 2020. Recent 2023 annual CT of chest, abdomen and pelvis and annual brain MRI showed NED. Praying for NED forever!!

My onc down at Mayo said that he doesn't put much faith in those tests. There are too many other things that can cause an increase in the readings. However, last time I was there for my Herceptin, he did order one that came back neg. Please try not to worry.

ditto to the "don't freak out"!! tumor marker tests fluctuate, sometimes quite a bit, and that does not necessarily mean that anything is going on. My onc. said if my tumor marker tests were "way off" from the previous ones, then she would wait a month and then repeat. The tumor markers are just a tiny piece of the cancer puzzle!! XO Suzan

First, I agree with Chrisy - the elvation of those numbers were so 'tiny', there's really no need for any concern.
Second, I agree with my oncologist (and Joan) - those tests are not reliable enough for me to have them.

Mine flucuate all the time and really, your numbers are so close, they really are the same numbers. This is just lab test variation.

Your numbers are considered stable - the same - it could be the difference of one lab to the next. Ask any oncologist - they will reassure you.
What you don't want to see are numbers that are doubling or tripling. Yours are virtually the same. I would not be concerned.

Doc says get rads consultant for L1 and possible biopsy of L1. I say, no thanks, doc. Lets see what xgeva brings to the table first. It's summer.

Sept - now - on chemo hold for calming tummy we hope. Markers stable for 2 months.
Nov 2013 - Herceptin-Perjeta-Avastin-Xgeva (collageneous colitis, which explains tummy probs, added Entocort)
December '13 BRAIN MRI ned in da head.

FEB 2014 PetCT clinical “impression”: 1. newbie nodule - SUV 1.5 right apical nodule, mildly hypermetabolic “suggestive” of worsening neoplastic lesion. 2. moderate worsening of the sternum – SUV 5.6 from 3.8
3. increasing sclerosis & decreasing activity of L1 met “suggests” mild healing. (SUV 9.4 v 12.1 in May ‘13)
4. scattered lung nodules, up to 5mm in size = stable, no increased activity
5. other small scattered sclerotic lesions, one in right iliac and one in thoracic vertebral body similar in appearance to L1 without PET activity and not clearly pathologic
APRIL 2014 - 6 YRS POST GAMMA ZAP, 7 YRS MBC & 18 YEARS FROM ORIGINAL DX!
October 2014: hold avastin, continue HPX
Feb 2015 Cancer you lost. NEDHEAD 7 years post gamma zap miracle, 8 years ST4, +19 yrs original diagnosis.
Continue HPX. Adding back Avastin
Nov 2015 pet/ct is mixed result. L1 SUV is worse. Continue Herceptin/avastin/xgeva. Might revisit Perjeta for L1. Meantime going for rads consult for L1
December 2015 - brain stable. Continue Herceptin, Perjeta, Avastin and xgeva.
Jan 2016: 5 days, 20 grays, Rads to L1 and continue on HAPX. I’m trying to "save" TDM1 for next line. Hope the rads work to quiet L1. Sciatic pain extraordinaire :((
Markers drop post rads.
2/24/16 HAP plus X - markers are down
SCIATIC PAIN DEAL BREAKER.
3/23/16 Laminectomy w/coflex implant L4/5. NO MORE SCIATIC PAIN!!! Healing.

DEC 2016 - PETCT: mets to sternum, lungs, L1 still about the same in size and PET activity. Markers not bad. Not making changes if I don't need to. Herceptin/Perjeta/Avastin/Xgeva

December 2017 - Progression - gonna switch it up
FEB 2018 - Kadcyla 3 cycles ---->progression :(
MAY30th - bronchoscopy, w/foundation1 - her2 enriched
Aug 27, 2018 - start clinical trial ZW25
JAN 2019 - ZW25 seems to be keeping me stable
APRIL 2019 - ONE DOZEN YEARS LIVING METASTATIC
MAY 2019 - progression back on herceptin add xeloda
JUNE 2019 - "6 mos average survival" LMD & CNS new single brain met - one zap during 5 days true beam SBRT to cord met
10/30/19 - stable brain and cord. progression lungs and bones. washing out. applying for ds8201a w nivolumab. hope they take me.
12/27/19 - begin ds8401a w nivolumab. after 2nd cycle nodes melt away. after 3rd cycle chest scan shows Improvement, brain MRI shows improvement, resolved areas & nothing new. switch to plain ENHERTU. after 4th cycle, PETscan shows mostly resolved or improved results. Markers near normal. I'm stunned but grateful.
10/26/20 - June 2021 Tucatinib/xeloda/herceptin - stable ish.
