Donating Hair for Women

Hi Everyone,

I was at an Oscar party here in Calif. last night and a college English instructor at the festivities said she's growing her hair and wants to donate it to women in need, but she said the well-known "Locks of Love" only takes hair for children and that if your hair is "gray," (ohmygosh) then it will be "auctioned off" and this troubles her. She would like to know that the hair she is growing is going for a woman in medical need.

Can anyone out there help me with some resources that I will forward to her?

Thanks a lock,

Vicki

Vicki

I had over 3 feet of hair cut of...it was to my knees. I wanted to donate it to Locks of Love for kids or anyone with cancer...which locks of love does, but they would not take it if it had ever been colored.....so it is sitting in a shadow box in my husbands beauty shop in our home.....he doesn't do hair for a living, but does it on the side.

Vicki, I don't know the name of the organization, but there is one where the hair goes to only women. It was highlighted on the Today Show and Diane Lane had her hair cut on the show for this reason. Maybe go to the Today Show site and see if you can track down the name. Also, perhaps the American Cancer Society or any of the breast cancer organizations can help come up with the organization's name. Acutually, I just remembered that my friends daughter is donating hers this month on her birthday to the organization I refered to. I will find out and post again.

Thanks for the hair donation tips!!

Thanks to both of you on the details of this and I look forward to the referral if you can find it!

I really appreciate the response and will let my friend, Kathleen, know that there is an organization which helps women.

Be well and have a beautiful day!

Just a quick aside...

When Lisa first recognized she was going to lose her hair we had a hair retirement ceremony - maybe details are in an old post, but we could not find anywhere to donate it so we did something else - we but it in bird houses around town as bedding. The idea caught on and some of her hair is bedding bird houses as far away as New York City and Holland...

My friend was going to donate her hair, but it wasn't long enough. She only cut 9 inches and they required 10 inches. I guess they need enough to allow the hair to be attached to the equipment used to stretch the hair. They also prefer the hair to be virgin, without hairdye, perm wave, or any other harsh chemicals.
