Alkaline Phosphatase

Would the introduction of Zometa to the treatment program cause a rise in the Alkaline Phosphatase? Mine went from 42 in December to 90 in January. Did have the first infusion of Zometa after the first reading and before the second reading. AST and ALT both dropped very slightly. My liver seems to be on my mind right now.

Sassy,

I don't know if it would cause and increase in your alkaline phosphatase level or not. Isn't Zometa a bone strengthener? If so, it would kind of make sense.

Just out of curiosity, why are you taking Zometa?

Sassy,
There are 2 forms of the alcaline phosphatase : one for the liver & one for the bones. Zometa will tend to reduce the one for bones. An increasing level of the marker for bones may indicate the presence of bone mets.
I don't think Zometa has side effects on the liver: occasionally on kidneys ,on jaw bone & serum calcium.
But you must also take into account that random variations of markers are not significant unless they persist in one direction. So do not worry but keep monitoring.

Karen the Zometa is for Osteopenia. I am currently on Lupron and Arimidex which affect the bones so hopefully the bisphosphonate will build them back up or stabilize.
