This was an excellent article as I did get my DCIS pathology report out. I believe my DCIS was really a DCIS (in my left breast). I did have IDC in my right (which is why I am here and its pathology is totally different). My DCIS was 0.3cm, clean margins, no lymphovascular invasion noted, grade 2, primarily cribiform, ER+/PR+ and Her 2 negative, no necrosis. Surgeon truly believed that it was something that I probably could have lived with my whole life and nothing would happen(????). Maybe not.

Of course they watch me like a hawk and I will probably get my breasts removed someday in the near future anyway. My surgeon said that if every woman's breasts were biopsied upon their death, they would find that 80% of them had DCIS and it is a normal occurence as we age. Why some turn against us as invasive bc is the question.

Is it, is it, is it only DCIS??? I didn't believe my local pathologist that it was only DCIS so I went to Memorial Sloan Kettering. They confirmed it was DCIS with only scattered micromets less than 1mm in the breast and a few cancer cells in the lymph node. They assured me that the node was contaminated due to the micromets in the breast and recommended CMF for the scantly positive node by IHC. After chemotherapy treatment, I had my pathology slides rechecked for a third time, still wondering why I had a micromets in the node if I only had micromets in the breast which would not be likely to metastatize. Via of my THIRD opinion, I finally was told I had a small invasive, 4mm her2+, er-,pr- breast cancer that had been previously misread. Now, here I sit today, getting late Herceptin for the her2+ breast cancer,LOL.

I too went to Sloan on a second opinion of both and got a DCIS/non invasive on my DCIS (I already knew the other was the real thing). I also had them do their own pathology on both. I figure they see more slides than a local cancer center. Their assessment of my IDC was not as bad as the local center and I figure they are more right (since they see more and it is a pathologist's view of how "bad" the cells look). My Nottingham for local center was 7 at Sloan 6 due to nuclear grade of 3 (poorly differentiated) versus Sloan's 2 of moderate. At least both concurred that the mitotic score was 1(a very good prognositic factor). Same readings on ER, PR Her 2 for both IDC and DCIS (which I already stated were in different breasts and were vastly different from each other).

Thanks for you input on this though and that you went to Sloan (who had a different opinion of your DCIS). It was comforting to know that they really do look at it well so I feel my DCIS really was a DCIS.
