I was just watching the evening news, and it was on Breast MRI'S. It said it was much more accurate in detecting cancer than the traditional mamograms. They recommended it for high risk patients which we all are being her-2 pos. I have had one once after my reconstruction because they felt something and wanted a different look. It was pretty easy just alot of time with my arms above my head. Does any of your doctors order the MRI instead of the mamos?? I would love all your thoughts on this before I talk to my onco. Thanks again!!

At the "high risk" cancer center in Ottawa they only use MRI's if you test positive for the gene mutation. In fact, if you are someone with breast cancer they don't use the MRI's unless you have dense breasts...which I think is fairly common as you get older.

Cure magazine had a good article about MRIs instead of mammos for high risk women and women with dense breasts. However, they did recommend that you make sure that the facility performing the MRI has the ability to follow it up with an MRI guided biopsy if something should be found.

I'd just add that as with all screening modalities there is a lot of gray area here. It seems possible that one possible result of more MRI's being done is that more women will be told that they have "multifocal" disease in addition to the primary tumor and this will lead to more mastectomies being done. The problem here, as I see it, is that lots of those smaller lesions would have been taken care of by radiation.
Just my two cents...
Jeff
